BSA - Bristol School of Acting

Hi, I'm applying for drama schools this year and am interested in speaking to any BSA students.
I like the look of their 3 year course, and it would be great to talk to any students doing Stage and Screen (2 or 3 year) because that's the course I would apply for.

Did you ever apply to BSA? Intrigued to how they are progressing as a "new" drama school.

Hi! I did. I ended up receiving an offer for their BA Screen course, but decided not to take it as I would ideally like a course that focuses on stage too. Am reapplying for BA courses this year, but not for BSA as I didn’t love the feeling of being in the building and auditioning. The movement part wasn’t very challenging and the building felt quite small. Stage and Screen BA is in tobacco factory but unfortunately I never got to visit that. One of the ladies taking my audition was an ex BOVTS teacher who'd tought there for a while I gather, and I have a lot of friends who are keen on BSA because of the proximity and the fact that they seem to share teachers.
I hope my experience helps a little, but obvs things like my "feeling" are not tangible 🤣

Thank you, that's very helpful. My daughter is going to audition there but the only person we know who had gone through the process had similar reservations to you. Having said that, it must be hard setting up a new drama school from scratch. Good luck this year!

Hey! I know this is very late of a reply but can maybe help others who stumble across this page!
I’ve just graduated from BSA’s Stage and Screen course and I can safely say that going to BSA has been one of the greatest decisions of my life, I have never felt more listened to and heard as an actor than being at this school! The teachers are wonderful and the training is top tier stuff. The final year consists of completing show after show after show and it’s definitely a unique way of doing things instead of having a few shows in second year and a few in the final year!
BSA puts time and effort into every student that walks through their doors and with new facilities being built this upcoming year it seems it will only get better. And the quality of the shows they put out are unmatched, set design, sound & lighting designs are always amazing and I’ve never felt more collaborative when creating a production.
If anyone has questions about the course and what I did I’m happy to answer any. I would highly recommend BSA

Hello!
The industry connections are top notch, you get outside directors coming in to do the majority of your final shows and you really get to know them, a lot of my year are still connected with some of them. We did an agent showcase and the large majority of the hear came out with agents but as well as all of this it sets you up for life after the school with or without an agent… lessons on tax and how to set up spotlight etc. I feel very set up for my career now. We’d also often have special workshops with casting directors and other professionals in the industry! There’s definitely a lot! Hope that helped

omg that’s super helpful thanks so much! yeh cos my only worry was with it being such a new school, i wasn’t sure what their connections with agents etc would be like, obviously part of wanting that training is to be able to be a working actor afterwards, and an important part of that sadly sometimes does have to do with having an agent! so helpful to be able to hear from someone who’s acc done the course!

oh fab! thank you so much for getting back to me, yeh cos my only reticence at all was cos obviously it’s so new, haven’t seen much of who people are signing too, and what work their doing after!
also was just wondering too what like a week in the life (kind of) is like, hours wise, what kind of other classes (aside from the acting) do you tend to do? is there singing included in the voice training and is their dancing included in movement? is it mainly 18yesr olds on the stage and screen course, not that it’s a big deal just curious (i’m not coming straight out of college/ sixth form) sorry i know this is so many questions! x

Yea I understand it being new is a risk but the teachers that work at BSA are certainly not new. Every teacher here is an already established teacher at school like Bristol Old Vic etc. and Stuart Wood (the head of the school) has worked at countless across the country including the ‘big’ ones…
Someone in the year above me signed on with a pretty big agent and has just completed filming for a tv series and are soon to be going to America to film a western which is exciting!
my weeks that I experienced will be different to yours as originally the course was an intensive 2 year course instead of the 3 that you would be doing but we are taught the same stuff. We were taught a lot of practitioners and their techniques that I had never heard of before such as vaktanghov and Suzuki. Suzuki was especially exciting as we had a 2 week residential to Dolgellau where we had an industry professional from the Siti company come over from New York to teach us for those 2 weeks in an intensive training programme on Suzuki and view pointing!
And the school prides itself in their belief in the Michael Chekhov technique which isn’t being taught at many schools but in my opinion is extremely useful and has helped me and my year a lot when it came to our final shows. We didn’t do singing in our year but the year below us and the following years have and will do singing along side voice classes and yes they do dance routines in movement classes which are very fun!
There are bound to be a few 18 year olds in the year as with any drama school but not everyone will be, the oldest in the year below me I believe is 36!
Any more questions let me know!

Hi, could I ask about the difference between the degree course you did and the Screen Acting course. My daughter applied for Stage & Screen but has been offered a place on the Screen Acting BA.

Hi! I applied for BSA stage and screen this year and I have made the shortlist! I really want to get in but I am worried that a space won’t become available for me. Do you know how often people get in from the shortlist?!
