Left/ right tail in statistical testing - OCR A, A Level maths

In doing statistical tests, using cumulative probabilities (both binomial and normal), I have always used a right tail cumulative probability when necessary, e.g. for P(X>17), I can just put that into my calculator and bingo.
However in all the mark schemes I see method marks for:
P(X>17)= 1-P(X<17)
I have never had to do this due to my calculator, and my teachers say this is fine, however would I be losing the method mark by doing right tail tests instead of left tailed all the time?
