If a student took a gap year after y13 , sitting exams in 2024 , then when would they be applying for university....would it be during the gapyear?

You have two options really, either you apply in the October after year 13 or you could make a deferred entry application at the start of year 13, therefore you don't have to think about the application during the gap year. You would have to look into which universities are more likely to accept deferred entry as some don't consider it.

Yes you would apply before end date around October 2023, and if successful you will be given a conditional offer dependent on your exam results for 2024. So you would need to sit UCAT/BMAT in the 2023 sitting.

Ok I get you, if your talking gap year after 2024 exams, you would sit ucat summer after your exams and then apply before October 2024 and you would get an unconditional offer based on your results.

If you are doing your A levels next year thrn you have two choices.

A) do UCAT in 2023 and apply Oct 2023 for a deferred place to start in 2025 (based on predicted grades)

B) dont apply anywhere in this years cycle, and sit UCAT in 2024, to apply with achieved grades in Oct 2024 to start in 2025.

Worth considering a few things here:-

* - lots of people take more thsn one application cycle to get a place. Therefore starting the process earlier means you stand a better chance of starting in 2025 if that is what you wish to do.

* applying can be quite intensive and time consuming with admissions tests application forms and interviews. Something to be said for doing your first "go through" whilst still at school and they can support you and your application. They when you do it in your gap year you are mote comfortable with the process. As are they of you need them for referees

* as above. It is quite intensive. It can be a hard slog with also trying to focus on your a levels.

* if you apply for deferred this year and you get in you can have a more restful gap year. If you dont, then it helps to get feedback and understand why and fix it next time around. If you get in and get the grades you are good. If you get in but dont get the grades you will need to consider resitting and applying agsin. So same position as this year.

* can always do the UCAT this year and see how you go. It might decide for you. Lots of people do a lot better on UCAT second time around.

* once have UcAT ask advice on thr megathread where you can apply to. There may be some that allow deferrals and some that dont. There may be some that put restrictions on people who apply to them twice. Its hard to know what to advise until you have a UCAT score.

Whatever you decide, best of luck !

I would also add. You can book your UCAT now based on the best dates for you. You can always cancel and get your money back if you decide not to sit it. T&Cs apply see UCAT website for details...
