Foundation Year Psychology with Placement

I'm thinking of applying through clearing to Brunel or Surrey and I'm not sure which is better. Surrey seems to have better placement opportunities but Brunel is offering an integrated placement with the rest of the course. Overall, is Brunel or Surrey a better university regarding things like course structure, student satisfaction and things like socialising? The downside is I don't meet the entry requirements for Surrey and would need to do a foundation year but if it's worth it for a good placement and experience I wouldn't mind.

Any help or advice would be really helpful

Hi,

These are very good questions! I will try to help you  As a matter of fact, I have completed a foundation year, and I am going to the placement year.

Foundation year, before I started it, sounded like an unfortunate extra year of study to me. I did not need much time to change my mind. After a few classes, I appreciated its usefulness and am significantly grateful I completed it. The university is an encounter with a completely different curriculum and assessment system. It is also a step towards adulthood and independence. The foundation year allows you to gradually get used to this new reality and equips you with the skills needed for a smooth transition and success at the university.

How? Through modules and assignments implemented throughout this year. My favourite subject was English For Academic Purposes. I have learned how to write a correct university essay, reflection, and report that I have never written before. I have thoroughly understood the academic style of writing and presentation, along with the requirements. When it came to writing my first essay in the first year, I felt extremely confident, and the feedback I received was very satisfying. Other skills I could develop through other modules were time-management, organisation, communication, presentation, numeracy, IT, and responsibility.

In addition to modules aimed at developing the skills needed for a smooth transition, there are also modules introducing basic knowledge of a given field. In the case of psychology, these are psychological asics and an introduction to research methods. Many of these things are further broadened during the first year, making it easier to acquire and understand.

At De Montfort University (DMU), we are strongly encouraged to choose a placement year in the form of a one-year work placement or student exchange. Additionally, there are teams available to support us throughout the process. From finding the right option, through the application, to comprehensive preparation for a new experience. That is how I decided to go on a student exchange in Spain. I received a lot of information beforehand, was helped with the application process, and took part in several preparatory workshops. Owing to this, I am enjoying my summer, and I know I can safely fly to Spain in September, where everything is already taken care of.

Therefore, I strongly encourage you to check out the DMU offer. We are in the middle of clearing as well. I refer you to our forum, particularly articles about what you should know about studying at DMU and Leicester, how psychology is structured and what to expect.

I hope I could help! If you happen to have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer them here or on The Ambassador Platform, where you can chat with me and other students.

Fingers crossed!

Take care,

I am glad I could help! I did mine online (Covid times), so my experience was pretty different, but even though I made a few amazing friends because of group projects and classes run in small groups. That is how I met my best friend. We have become flatmates since our first year of university. Therefore, the answer is yes, it is easy!
