Declining conditional firm offer for Clearing

I currently have a conditional firm offer and would like to decline it due to various reasons in order to move to Clearing, am I supposed to contact the university to decline it beforehand (according to https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/university/apply/clearing/guide-to-clearing, but last updated in 2017)
or will there be a button to decline my place on results day?

if firm offer accepts on results day = turns into unconditional offer = can use the button to decline place

if firm declines on results day = placed at insurance choice = can also use button to decline place

is this correct and so i don't have to do anything before results day? im so confused

You can decline it.The one concern is whether you have booked accommodation as you might be liable for that. Check your contract.

It's correct that you don't need to do anything before results day and your scenarios are correct for when the 'Decline my place' button will appear.

Here is the link to this year's clearing FAQ thread that is worth a read through:

There are other scenarios where your firm or insurance choice hasn’t sent a decision to UCAS by results day. This accounts for around 1/8 of applicants most years.

If you know now that you don’t want to go to your firm or insurance choice regardless of your results then email them TODAY with your full name, date of birth, UCAS ID and course applied for and let them know that you plan to use decline my place to use clearing to apply elsewhere.

It might not get read but it also might mean that if they are short on space for your course that someone else with missed grades will be accepted on results day.

It also means that if they’re not sure whether to accept you with lower grades that they can make a decision instead of keeping your application as conditional.
