Third year university student here to answer any questions about Freshers.

Hi there,

I think it would be wonderful if you could let other students know your experience of a Freshers week. What activities did you have? Was it nice?
I bet a lot of people would appreciate you experience

For sure! I don't have any specific questions perse, but it'd be nice to know what to expect in case I've got questions/anxieties lurking somewhere deep in my mind.

Hiya,

I'm a second year now but I absolutely loved freshers week!

Lancaster is a bit different to other unis as it has a collegiate system. This means that a lot of your freshers events are in your college but that doesn't mean you don't socialise with the other colleges.

Everyone moved in on the Saturday or Sunday before freshers and most people buy a welcome pack that includes a wrist band that gives you free or reduced fare access to all the freshers events, as well as some other essentials like a water bottle and a college T-shirt. There is also a copy of the freshers events timetable but usually it's posted online as well. I think it's a good idea to buy one of these packs because it saves you money if you go to most of the events like I did.

During the days, there were activities like campus tours, cupcake painting and woodland walks put on by the uni and colleges. I found these the best way to bond with other people in my flat as we could arrange to go together and it's a more chill environment than in the evenings. On one of the days there was also freshers fair where all the societies have stalls where you can go sign up. Theres also local businesses, entertainment and food so there are loads of freebies and it's just a fun event to go to. But it's always really busy so prepare yourself for that. I managed to lose everyone I had gone in with because there were so many people! With the other people in my flat, we also went to societies taster sessions as a way to get to know each other more and to support each other in figuring out what clubs to join.
My department also put on a full day of events including a free lunch and a taster practical so that people on the course could get to know each other.

In the evenings there were events like a campus bar crawl, 'formal night' where we went to bars in town and various nights in each of the clubs in the city. There was something on every evening but a lot of people just choose to go to the nights that they want to and there is no obligation to attend any events that you don't want to. I really enjoyed these nights as I got to socialise with lots more people.

Overall, freshers is extremely busy if you choose to go to all the activities. My best piece of advice would be to go in with an open mind and chat to as many people as possible. Everyone is new so it's the best time to start talking to people and building connections.

If you're third year, doesn't that mean that you started off uni during covid restrictions?

Hi,

I'm just going into third year now so started uni in 2021. Lots of restrictions had been lifted by then so many of the freshers events went ahead. Quarantining was still in place but I was lucky enough that I didn't get sick. Unfortunately, later in the term, some teaching moved back online due to covid. However, my uni experience has been largely unaffected by it.
