Hi!

I have recently come back from a summer camp in the USA. It was my first time. It was not Camp America, but Camp Leaders, which is a sister organisation. I even wrote a post about making the most of your summer and included this idea. Since I am fresh out of the program, I can share a few valuable comments. Surely, this is an otherworldly way to maximise the summertime, including getting to know a lot of people, gaining work experience, cultural exchange and unforgettable trips.

I spent ten weeks at my camp, which is why I made wonderful friends and bonded with some people so much that I never expected it. I had the opportunity to interact with people from all over the world, from New Zealanders to Mexicans and Europeans. It was already an extraordinary adventure and experience.

We could go out in the evenings most days, but that depends on the camp rules. For us, Sundays and Thursdays were closed and on a few special days. On the rest of the days, we could go out. Though, we had to come back by 12:30 at night. Every Wednesday, for example, we would go to a local pub for karaoke with the locals. If you decide to apply, check whether the camp you are interested in is not in the middle of nowhere because there is no shortage of such places.

From time to time, events and activities were organised for staff at the camp. We had a disco party and movie night. We could take advantage of attractions for children, such as horse riding, rope park, or water sports. However, you go there to work, and most of the time you actually work. I was in the office for 10 hours a day with one day off a week. It all really depends on the camp and the role you get. For example, I heard that lifeguards and sports specialists did not work for more than 8 hours and had a very convenient schedule.

Therefore, before you decide on a camp, read the reviews, and before you decide on a specific position, comprehensively ask what they expect and what the working day looks like. That way, it is easier to avoid getting into the proverbial labour camp. Thus, you can then experience a real summer of your life.

I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions  You can also chat with me and other student ambassadors through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

Hey

I just got back from working at a summer camp this summer and I had a great time and really want to go back. I'm not going to lie it is a lot of hard work. I have heard that time off and other policies do vary from camp to camp but as far as most camps go, they want you to have fun but also know that the kids are your priority. It is pretty demanding and at times you are genuinely exhausted but in my opinion its worth it. You make some great friends and have fun. Just be careful not to go just for a good time because, if and when it gets a bit tough you've got to have a reason that made you want to be there in the first place.

Best of luck
