How many students are in your uni class (first year)?

I have just started my social work course and there are only 5 students in the class. Is this normal? My friend at another uni is one of 55 students studying the same subject. The course and uni have been really disorganised so far, so I'm wondering what class sizes are like in other unis/courses?

Class sizes can be an indicator of popularity of the course that you are studying. Additionally, some universities specialise or are known for particular subjects. For example, Liverpool Hope University is quite well-known for teaching, so we produce quite a lot of teachers and the likes of Education, Primary Education, etc. are always really popular. Our intake is quite small in general as a campus-based university, but this is a good thing!

I studied English Literature at Hope and altogether there was only around 13 of us, so I do believe it comes down popularity as the likes of Durham University might have a lot more, as they are ranked quite high for English!

However, one benefit of having small class sizes is that it has a lot more of a personal feel! You may get a lot more academic support from your tutors in return.
