Should I be starting revision now at Uni?

Hey Guys, I'm a 1st year in at Glasgow and I've found that with the amount of work I've been given in terms of stuff like readings and pre recorded videos to watch I've been struggling to also fit in time to revise. In my final year of high school I would do about 3 hours revision every day from the start of the year whereas here I'm lucky if I'm even fitting in one hour a day. I study Maths, CS and Politics with Maths readings and Politics readings taking up most of my time. I was wondering if anyone else is able to keep up with Uni work and also revise at the same time as I'm wondering if I'm just managing my time poorly or if this is normal?
Hi there,

The change from A-level to university is a big jump. It's completely natural to struggle a bit with managing the workload and becoming a lot more independent with your learning. Don't beat yourself up comparing it as it really is a lot different and you will have a lot more now to do.

In terms of keeping up with it, there is no right way. The good thing about university is how much you can tailor it to what works for you. This may be daunting, especially if you had a system before which may not be working right now. Again this is all completely normal and I promise you are not the only one to struggle with university workload.

When I joined, i was recommended to spend 1 hour independently to every hour i spent in a lecture. This may mean you are already meeting such as your readings would be your independent learning and it's great your managing to keep up with the reading even if your revision is smaller, thats already a great step and commitment!

Honestly as a first year even doing 1 hour per day is already great and you should keep up the good work. But remember to also take care of yourself! It's okay to take a break to rest or pursue your hobbies. Make some time for any interests you have and join some societies to keep socialised! You won't be able to do your best work if you are too worn out,

Good luck with everything!

Hi there

The change from A levels to University can be quite significant. It is good that you are already considering revision.

For University, I think the most important thing is focusing on seminar preparation. As these questions/ topics will most likely come up in exams, it is important to understand them first before moving on too quickly to revision. For seminar readings and questions, try to keep your notes clear and organised. For myself, I use the seminar worksheets when revising nearer to exams- it prevents me having to look through textbooks or lecture slides in the revision period.

You are usually given more time to prepare for University exams than at A levels. Depending on your University and term dates, I often find myself having several weeks off, where I can focus solely on revision. Overall, focus on making good notes in seminars and lectures, as these will form the basis of your revision towards the end of the year. (If you have any free time, you can always revise during term time, but try to maintain a good work life balance and enjoy University).

Hope this helps.

Hey,

I hope you're enjoying university so far!

As others have said, the content that you are taught during lectures and seminars are likely to come up in your end of year exams. One thing that I can recommend is that you have clear and concise notes from those lectures, seminars, and your own secondary reading. What I tended to do was write up my notes after a lecture in a way that made sense to me. I would tend to rewrite notes in my own words to made sure that I understood the content and that way, you have done bits of revision and you have put yourself in a good position when it comes to revision, as you already have organised notes!

If you get reading weeks, use that time to go over anything that you may have missed and ensure that you are on track with seminar prep, assignments, etc.

I hope this is helpful!

The thing to keep up with is the set reading and set activities which are on top of attendance at lectures and seminars. That is more than enough for the time being. Do not overload yourself.

Hello Sophie,
Honestly, 1 hour is already a good start. If you utilize your lecture your lecture notes wisely, 1 hour should be more than enough (this is highly dependent on the individual and the course, though). One tactic that helped a lot was recording lectures (if your lecturer allows), and then listening later to complete my notes or refresh my memory. In a way, high school felt more demanding. I found hours and hours of study at university was less helpful than keeping up with readings and assignments. Many of my friends did similar amounts of revision, so I think what you are experiencing is totally normal. If you do feel overwhelmed or that your mastery of your subject is below what you want, it may help to reach out to academic support (eg. tutoring), but otherwise this seems a great start. You shouldn't stress yourself out too much about it, especially as you are transitioning. Everything about starting university is stressful, so go easy on yourself.

Good luck!

@C0rs3

I agree with @cheadle. You need to prioritise readings and pre-recorded videos.

If you do have time during the week to write some revision cards or to do some posters with some of the key items, then that's helpful, but your main priority should be to keep up with the work and to understand what you are learning.

During a quieter week or during the holidays you might be able to do some more revision, but try not to stress too much about this, as it is important to get some rest during the hols and to finish any assignments that need to be done.

All the best,

Oluwatosin 3rd year student University of Huddersfield
