Future Career

This is going to be quite lengthy but i really need advice . i am currently a year 12 student studying A-level english, sociology and level 3 media. I have a deep passion for film/media and was considering a career in Journalism. However, recently i have been put off the career due to what i feel is a low uk salary and also what the degree entails in university. I am fascinated by entertainment/ celebrity/ film journalism however i feel like most of the university courses entail spending a long time studying political journalism and the news which i fear could possibly make me not enjoy the course and put me off the career. The thought of not studying journalism makes me feel weird since it has been my dream for years now and i am stuck on what to do i really want to work in the media/film industry however i am not sure what jobs i could go for in them or if they are even well paying careers as i want to be able to earn money as i have academically worked so hard. Many also say it is not worth going to uni for film or media as it puts you in a lot of debt and the outcoming salary is not always worth it but i wanted to use university as an excuse to not only get a degree but to get out of the west midlands (where i currently live) and preferably move down south because i feel like there are more job opportunities down that way (my dad tells me this is not true however i am unsure) so another thing i am considering is an apprenticeship degree but another question is do i have the opportunity to move away doing an apprenticeship degree or would university be better. Any advice on jobs in media/film industry, if a journalism degree is worth it or if i should go university or do an apprenticeship degree would be ever so highly appreciated.
Hi Ella,

Fellow West Midlander here!
You've got a lot of options to choose from to fit your criteria, which can feel overwhelming- I was in a similar position!

If you're wanting to get stuck into the film/media industry, I would absolutely recommend a degree apprenticeship- these give you the best of both worlds, giving you practical skills and experience in the industry, which is incredibly useful for your career, as well as giving you the academic qualification that will allow you to progress in other industries if you want to change careers in the future.

There are job opportunities in the south, but I would also recommend looking up north too! Places like MediaCity in Salford are home to lots of big media companies like the BBC, ITV, Warner Bros, and lots more! Most of these offer apprenticeships or degree apprenticeships, validated by local universities.

In an industry like film/media, practical skills and experience are more valuable to employers, so if you do decide to go down the university route, make sure you choose a course that is mostly practical-based rather than theoretical.

I hope this information helps, and I wish you the best of luck with your future!

Have a look at the Screenskills website for an introduction into the sorts of jobs and careers available in tv and film industries.

generally it’s better to steer clear of media degrees and aim at something more specific. The only exception to that is if you’re interested in a career in radio (there’s very few if any specialist radio production/broadcast degrees but some general media degrees offer radio as a specialist pathway).

it’s also better to go for practical degrees rather than theory based courses (sometimes theory courses will be titled “studies” but sometimes they are just called “film” ).

it sounds like you’re more interested in the TV side of things than film in terms of content/format?
