Answering Questions: What is a BEng vs an MEng?

Level of Qualification:

BEng: This is an undergraduate degree, typically taking three years to complete (four in Scotland). A BEng is equivalent to a bachelor's degree in other fields.

MEng: This is an integrated master's degree, combining undergraduate and postgraduate studies into a single course. It usually takes one year longer than a BEng to complete (four years in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and five years in Scotland).

Depth of Study:

BEng: Provides a solid foundation in engineering principles and practices. It covers the basics of the chosen engineering field and includes practical and theoretical study.

MEng: Goes beyond the BEng level, offering more advanced knowledge and specialised modules. It often includes more project work, potentially with a focus on research and development.

BEng (Bachelor of Engineering): Think of it as the standard undergraduate degree you get in engineering. It's like your entry ticket into the world of engineering. Usually takes about 3-4 years to complete. It gives you a solid base in engineering concepts, but it's more about the broad strokes than the tiny details.

MEng (Master of Engineering): This one's a step up it's a postgraduate degree. After finishing your BEng, if you feel like diving deeper into engineering, that's where an MEng comes in. It takes about 1-2 more years. Here, you get to specialise and learn about engineering topics in much more depth. It's for when you want to get more advanced knowledge, maybe focus on a specific area, or aim for higher positions in your career.

Just an FYI UK students, the above post is incorrect, in some non-UK countries MEng/ME are postgraduate degrees however here they are not.

The MEng is an undergraduate masters engineering course. It is an integrated masters, the MSc is the postgraduate masters.

Postgraduate & undergraduate masters have some differences typically in the levels of specialisation available and the research focus. An MEng is a 480 credit course (4 years of 120 credits, typically 8 months of the year with the summer off ) and an MSc is a 180 credit 1 year (full time lasting 12 months, and requires an appropriate undergraduate degree such as a BEng or BSc or similar before enrolling).

Apologies, you are absolutely correct. Thank you for pointing out this oversight and the original post has been corrected.
It's also worth pointing out that for student unsure which option they would choose:

UK nationals getting student finance - should choose the longer option as it's easier to reduce funding length than to extend it.
Non-UK nationals who require a student route visa to study in the UK - should choose the shorter option as it's less complex to extend a visa for an additional year than to adjust it for a shorter length (the latter requires applying for a new visa from your home country, the former can be done while in the UK)
