Biomedical science at Warwick or Biological sciences at Exeter?

Recently I have gotten offers from Warwick for biomedical sciences (BBB) and biological sciences for Exeter (also BBB). I'm struggling who to choose between these 2. From what I have seen Exeter seems to be better for biology whereas Warwick has a better reputation as a university in terms of rankings and global recognition (sorry if I'm completely wrong). I am planning to specialise in microbiology for my undergraduate course but in the long term I would like to look at astrobiology for my career.

From an employability viewpoint would Warwick be the better choice?

Hi there @edamame21,

First, congrats on receiving your offers! I hope you are looking forward to starting university!

I don't know too much about the biological sciences course here (I am a history student) but there are a few things I found really helpful to consider when choosing between 2 universities.

First, I would take a closer look at the course you have applied for. University courses will usually vary slightly, with different modules, assessment types, contact hours, placement opportunities, etc. You might find that one course suits you better than the other, so this could really help with your decision! I'm sure you have already looked at the Biological Sciences Page - you can also get in touch with one of our current students studying this course via our online messaging system, linked here. They should be able to help with any subject specific questions you may have!

I would also consider societies and extra curriculars - these are a really great way to engage with the student community and incorporate balance into your life in the middle of your studies! Again, you may find that one university has certain societies that the other doesn't - this could help if you're really struggling to decide between the two!

You may also want to consider the type of area you want to live - personally, I have found Exeter to be the perfect mix between campus and city life! The campus is lovely and green, everything is really accessible and easy to navigate (you will have to get used to a few hills though!!). It is a 10-15 minute walk into town, where there are plenty of restaurants, bars, clubs, pubs, etc to choose from on a night out! Additionally, I'm only a 2 hour train ride from home - this was important to me as I knew I'd want to visit home during first year. This might not be a huge factor in your decision, but is still worth keeping in mind!

I can see you are particularly concerned about employability - here at Exeter we have a really fantastic Careers Team who are on hand to help with everything from CV writing and interview practice to finding placement opportunities and considering future career prospects! The University of Exeter is also very highly regarded by employers, so this isn't something I would be too worried about!

On a personal note, I have absolutely enjoyed my time here. The students are really welcoming and friendly, and the staff are always on hand for support. We also have excellent sports facilities and plenty of amazing events run throughout the year - there is always much fun to be had!

I hope this has helped in some way! Please feel free to get in touch with any other questions you might have!
