I realise the older population will care about appearance to an extent, but I also think that these days people are generally much more concerned about the quality of care they receive and as such pay more attention to the doctor's mannerisms and overall rapport with them (does he/she listen/allow them to speak etc).

Yeah, course they don't.... I'm sure all the old ladies who still dress up to go see their GP notice exactly what everyone is wearing. If you think no-one notices or cares about what you wear, think again. They may not say anything, but it is noticed.

A particularly bad day in GP included a little old lady who said to me "now that's a nice skirt, where did you get it, I think I might get one too..."

Not really, hence I've lost most of my Welsh accent growing up. I originally lived in Merthyr Tydfil which was a proper valleys town, I moved out when I was ~7-8 though.

Cwmbran is in the valleys (Cwmbran literally means vally of the crow) but it doesn't hold much of an accent.

I'd appreciate some of the oldies' thoughts on a related question: how soon do we need to home in on a specialty, or at least ideas thereof? Or phrased differently, how important is it that we do so early on? I haven't the foggiest what I want to do (or indeed don't want to do, as it often boils down to), and probably won't do until final year at least. Yet there's already a pressure to 'specialise', as it were, what with some friends & acquaintances being so sure of themselves - many having related 'research' placements this summer. I appreciate a lot of that is just CV/ego posturing, and that choices will change significantly over time for many. But still, it's hard not to be intimidated by the gunners out there

All these random non medics and 'prefreshers' posting in here! Take that "I hate uni" thread, has a SALT student and a random BSc Scientist posting in it.....

Hardly any though. And they're mostly people going to medical school in September. Chill man.

Been through this many a time before. Applicants who have accepted offers are not medical students, the same way that medical students who have passed finals are not doctors until they graduate. If, suddenly they have and I have missed something, then perhaps the forum should be changed to 'current medical students, doctors and those who have accepted offers from university'. It is courtesy to those who are medics and doctors to not post in this subforum.

The other exit off the roundabout by newport, right? Nice little place, my band played the opening ceremony for the shopping center a couple of years back IIRC.

I guess I just don't feel so anal about it. The odd post here and there isn't exactly offensive. Also, there are medics who have posted in the doctors' thread.


That's the 'risk' you run on these websites though. And I'm obviously not informed about your particular situation, but I suspect that it probably would've happened whether the 'perpetrator' posted or not (if they did). Applicants etc. will stalk this thread to hell anyway, irrespective of whether they post. I don't want to see it flooded with posts from non-medics, but occasional ones or from people definitely heading to medical school I have no issue with.

The shopping centre has been here for years though, like since the 80s. It's like the largest undercover centre in Wales or something.

After digi left I went back and edited a load of posts from my history. I was way to easy to find if you knew what to look for. My facebook is now properly private, too, so I guess something good has come of all this.


I guess I'm not too anal about people who have unconditional offers posting here, as long as it doesn't take the piss. They'll have their own Freshers 2011 thread in a few weeks anyway.

Don't know how they connected the username with the real name except perhaps through pictures posted on the forums (although that's epically stalkerish!) but the facebook request thing was through the University network, not through TSR, so just make sure you've not made it so that anyone in your uni network can request/see you. Then again to join the Glasgow one you have to have a Glasgow email so I'm not sure how they were getting into the network!

Personally I think there are bigger things to worry about but each to their own.

The Notts one requires an email address too.

I was more concerned about having, amongst other things, named my town which is fairly small. That would make it very easy to figure out who I am if you were, say, an inquisitive admin person at my uni.
