Eeeek! Just got my application in with CCUSA last Monday!!!! I'M SO EXCITED! I have all 3 references (hopefully they'll be accepted), they were submitted online, and I've sent off my photos and signed programme agreement, which arrived on Thursday I think according to my email! Now it's just a waiting game, Christ, I hope I'll be accepted but reading through old threads, people who have loads of experience seem to get rejected really easily so I wonder what they're looking for?!:s-smilie: I've tried to make myself as enthusiastic etc as possible but it's rather hard to transfer into those little boxes lol. So far CCUSA have been great, they've answered all my trivial little questions really fast and they seem really nice! Let me know who you guys go with, it'll be nice to have people to get even more excited with!!!

I was told the references had to be endorsed some how, may I ask how you submitted them online did you scan them?

I'm thinking to apply for Camp America. I've wanted to do it for so many years. Was a bit worried I'll be too old though, as I'll be 25 by the time camp comes around.

Hello, I have applied for 2012 Camp America and will be 23 when im there. I have had my interview and also my CRB check in the post. Does anyone know how long it takes now until i may be placed???
Cheers everyone
I have worked as the lifeguard supervisor for the past 3 summers at one of the premium summer campsnin New York.

If anyone is interested i can get you a direct placement so that you don't have to pay excessive fees to an agency

If you have any questions about the camp America experience feel free to pm me

Hmm, well when it asked for references it gave me two options, one was to input the email addresses and phone numbers in addition to the name of my referees, the other was to print off the paper application and to snail mail (post) it back to CCUSA offices in London as I received them. I went for the email option as I knew it would be faster/tidier, and I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they check up on most references by ringing the referees and asking them questions that way? Each time one of the people I asked to provide me with a reference submitted it online, I received an email saying that "one of my references had been completed and added to my application".

Can I ask where you heard they had to be endorsed? Because, while that does sound about right, I haven't heard of it before, and as far as I know none of my references have heard anything from them as one of them said they'd let me know if they did, just so I'd know there was something being done about my application. It's been about 3 weeks now since I paid all of my fees, and I haven't heard a thing from CCUSA about an interview or anything, and I know they've started interviewing, so I'm kind of worried about being accepted now ha :s-smilie:

It was one of my friends but she did not go with ccusa so perhaps it is different with different camps as she only needed 2 references not 3

Hell Abby, i had my interview back in august and it was really chilled out. they just looked through my app and took details for police checks etc. i got to ask questions too and find out how the rest of the process worked.
Good luck you will be fine

Wow, that was really quick! When did you apply? What kind of activities can you do, out of interest?

I applied about a week before that post, so got the interview within 2 weeks! I'm doing horse riding

Just be positive and friendly at the interview and you'll be fine
I'm going with Bunac again next year, just finalising everything up at the moment. I have to say Bunac all the way over Camp America - you pay less and earn more with Bunac, they are much more helpful and generally extremely supportive towards all the people they place at camps. They meet you at the airport, meet you when you reach the USA and have an office in the USA that you can call whilst at camp should you have any problems. I've had friends that have gone with Camp America and had a great time but personally I wouldn't use them.

In terms of experience Bunac seem to be looking for people with relevant experience in teaching or caring for children in a 'professional' environment. For example I coach people 5-22 in cheerleading about 3 times a week. Although I won't be teaching cheerleading with Bunac obviously the skills I have learnt can be applied to different activities. Unfortunately I don't think babysitting for friends/family counts for much, but anyone who is worried about experience you still have plenty of time before next Summer to volunteer with a local sports club or Brownies/Scouts.

Bunac endorse all references received, they won't send your application around to suitable camps if you've got a bad reference because it reflects badly on them. Usually they don't look at references until after they have declared your interview successful though - the interviews I had were basically informal chats, talked over my experience, why I wanted to apply/my motives, what activities I wanted to partake in and why. It was all pretty simple stuff - the questions they ask you are based on the online form you fill in anyway. They also asked to see my passport so maybe take along some form of ID! I was jut super enthusiastic and didn't sell myself short, tell them about all your fantastic qualities and why camps need to employ someone like you.

Do you have to official qualifications for camp america? I have my interview this weekend but I feel as if my application may be weaker than most as I don't have any official qualifications in my chosen skills. I just have experience and I am studying the majority of skills at A-Level. It's just that I've seen people who have been placed are those with certificates and such. :frown::frown:

The only plus I seem to have is that I have had experience with children.

They'll talk you through your top 3 activities, ask if you have any formal qualifications etc, then just through your choice of camps, really nothing major, I thought mine would be so much worse! Was asked a few randoms as well like 'did I know what the difference was between western and American horse riding was' (the way you hold the reins, and the saddles are different, among other things- I don't know much on the subject, especially since I said nothing remotely about horses on my form!). Then just talk you through the different types of forms and stuff, and your flight options! Well that's how it was in mine.
Really nothing major, I was expecting something really intense, but it was only about half an hour/40 minutes long in total! Best of luck, and don't stress!

Well as it's summer camp, the programme runs for the duration of the summer, usually from June until late August,
(tip: the earlier you can travel to the USA, the more camps we can send your application to, giving you a better chance of being placed at camp)

Having a sailing qualification is awesome and will definitely help with your qualification since sailing is an in-demand activity that not many people have experience of.
However, having a qualification is not enough on its own, you'll also need experience of teaching the activity and experience of working with kids in a leadership capacity. For more info about Summer Camp USA, please call 02072510662 or visit www.bunac.org.uk/summercampusa
Applications for Summer camp 2012 open this Sept, get your application in as early as you can to boost your chances of placement!

so if someone wants to for example start at the beginning of august, can they? so can you choose the date to start as long is its in the time period the camps run, or does everyone need to start at a certain date ?
Alsoooo is there a deadline to send applications to apply ? thanksss

Just want to add that I had the amazing experience of participating on BUNAC's summer camp USA programme last summer and had the time of my life! Bunac are just realy helpful straight from when you apply online to the day you leave camp in America. They give you specific and clear instructions on how to go through the whole visa process (i was in and out of mine within 20 minutes) andput you on a group flight so the nerves instantly fade away as soo as you arrive at heathrow airport when you've got other people doing exactly the same thing as you. I actually ended up flying out with 5 other people who were working at the same camp as me!

They are also just really suppotive when you're in America, a bunac representative coems to visit you on camp to check how you are doing which was reassuring. Also, at the end of my travels, I got caught up in the Hurricane. Luckily my flight wasn't cancelled but I knew, if I did have a problem I could call BUNAC to sort it and reassure me  Bunac are just really friendly and supportive and would definitely go with them again over any other company

hope this helps

Hey, i'm thinking of applying to BUNAC. I am thinking of working as a counsellor, not sure how much work experience/skills you need though
I have previous work experience in primary schools, and currently volunteer working with children occasionally. I'm studying childhood studies at uni, and i do dance for beginners lol and sign language.. i have done drama in the past. i really don't know if this is enough or too little. Also, not sure whether to apply to BUNAC or Camp America? do you get a free return flight with BUNAC?

any advice would be great, thanks! i don't feel like the drama and dance i've done is enough to teach it to children.. do you have to lead an activity by yourself? and how 'good' at the activity do you have to be?

You don't have to be able to teach an activity alone if you don't feel you are qualified enough. You can offer to be an 'assistant' in the particular activity, that way you might not feel so out of your comfort zone. You'd never be left on your own anyway. You can also be a general counsellor rather than a specialist counsellor, which means you're not assigned to a particular activity but go and help out with different things each day depending on the camps needs. That's still just as fun, if not more so sometimes!

I can't comment on applying through Camp America. Personally I haven't and wouldn't apply through them but everyone is different. Bunac arrange your flights and effectively 'loan' you the cost of them, which gets taken back from your salary at the end of camp. Camp America say your flight is 'free' but it's not really when they take a very, very large chunk back from your salary, more so than Bunac and Camp America also charge you more in fees before the leave the UK. I've had friends who have been through Camp America and like I've said they had a great time but it's not for me. Just go with what you feel most comfortable with!
