Yeah. The girl that wrote that article is on my course. Frequently find other course friends in the Pi Mag as well!

I don't actually know what she studies - maybe English? - so that tells me little I see people I know in there too! Not course friends (maths students don't tend to do much writing ) but people from societies and the like. It's a surprisingly small world, really.

Just read the article; very thought-provoking (for me, because I am admittedly slightly ignorant on the subject! But now feel more informed) and I'm very glad you got the chance to express yourself properly after the horrible comments made in the last issue.

I did find it slightly odd how you say you've asked your tutors to refer to you by a different name (and hand in coursework), but at no point did you refer to yourself (well, they refer to you) by your preferred name, or even... mention it. You were Tom throughout.

I basically wrote half of it I got sent a load of questions and wrote a load of replies, and then it was made into an article. So luckily I agree totally with its content. Plus the unreserved apology below doesn't exactly go amiss

Don't worry, the vast majority of people are slightly ignorant on the topic I'm hoping it was informative, though. Do you think it was pitched at the right level for people who know precisely nothing about trans issues? I tried to avoid using specialist language as much as I could, but I often forget that I've spent years reading up on this stuff and most people haven't

I haven't read the article (can't find it online, and I'm never at the main campus) but I assume his preferred name is Tom if they've called him that. Should probably let Kerily confirm that though :P

Yeah, I think it was. I had to check what cisgender meant, but I've just seen it was defined at the beginning of the article I mean, I don't know any transgender people personally, so it was nice to have a personal insight.

I think the issue of the naming of toilets is really interesting; it's something most people just take for granted, but everyone needs that sense of privacy. It's a shame something as basic and everyday as that can make you uncomfortable, so I'm glad they're taking steps to help you and other trans students. And I'm glad you've been accepted by your tutors etc.

Yes. That's because my name is Tom! Tom is my preferred name. Hence why I get people to refer to me by it. (Fun fact: not every transition is from male to female.)

The toilet thing is an issue, because I want to be able to use public toilets I mean, as I said in the article, I get funny looks in the women's toilets, but I also get funny looks in the men's... and I want to be able to use the toilets in public, basically, because like everyone else, I occasionally need to do so. The good news is that they should be sorting this out sometime soon

I guess you're right, I might know people who are transgender who haven't told me Like I said, glad the toilet issue is becoming resolved

You should come to Chandler House! Unfortunately it's not that close to the main campus (well a 10 minute walk, close to Russell Square ). It's the linguistics/ speech sciences department and was refurbished a few years ago. All of the toilets are unisex

Should come to Max Rayne. We got two unisex toilets in a corridor, with added features. One will send it's intake back out at you, so you don't have you worry about losing it down the drain, and the other one has collapsed so many times it's using bent pieces of door to bolt it to the wall, and a piece of string tied round a curtain hook in place of a lock.

I have to ask, people of Astor, are all the lower rent places this ****ty, or just us? Is it the influence of Camden?

What have they done now? I'm pretty close to snapping myself.

They're still giving completely contradictory answers to people who ask if we have to pass exams to have 'successfully completed' the courses. Apparently tons of people in France have failed exams and been told it doesn't matter, yet I know of people who've mailed in the last week asking and been told we have to pass.
