Hard determinism is the belief that our fate is set for us and that we have no free will.

I'd be wary of using the word fate because it has religious implications. (that being God has a plan for us etc)

Hard determinism is simply the idea that we have no free will because everything in the past has an affect on our future actions. We are as victim to the laws of physics as a falling apple is to a tree.

You can think about it like a snooker table (probably the most common example). If you hit a ball with another it'll go in a certain direction. The ball that's been hit has no control over where it'll go since it doesn't have free will. The same goes for humans. All our past actions affect the future ones. It is said that if I know everything about the past then we'd be able to predict what we do in the future.
