The UCL PPE thread

I hate this so much.

Why are they so slow with this. I got into ESPS at UCL because it was the next best thing besides PPE, and literally I hate studying languages: I just want a normal PPE degree.

Does anyone know if the UCL course will be like Durham's where you can't drop any of the three subjects after first year, or whether it'll be like Oxford where you can drop one

UCL's course is confusing me a little bit. I'm almost certainly gonna apply for it but I still have one key question:

It's the age old problem of Maths and PPE again. I'm doing Maths and likely to get maybe an A prediction - not A*. I'm not too sure where I stand with this therefore. I don't think I'm ruled out of UCL's application as they mention that you only need it if, in your degree, you are gonna be quite Econ-specific, plus I'm guessing that decision will involve your actual A Level result, not your prediction.

Off hand - does anyone know if this rules me out of LSE? I know they say they require A* Maths but is that at the prediction stage specifically, or if you end up with an A* come A Level results day 2015, is that OK?

How competitive do you think this will be?

Highly. I expect it will be one of the more competitive subjects at both UCL and LSE.

If I recall UCL's prospectus, it said it would only take 25. GAH

It'd be interesting to know how they'd control those numbers, given they'd probably have to assume that many people they give offers to will turn them down for Oxford.

true dat. I also wonder how UCL PPE applicants will regard it in comparison to other unis that have offered PPE for a while (e.g. Durham and Warwick.)

Considering that for both unis its the first time they're offering it, do you really think it will be that competitive? (

He's joking and Warwick is usually seen as better than King's. King's seems to have an inflated reputation internationally for some reason. It's generally harder to get into Warwick than King's.

How come they ask for an A* in maths gcse if you want to specialise in politics and philosophy?

I know right! I just don't see how its relevant considering the fact that they are both strongly essay based subjects... I only got an A in maths (even though I was only a couple UMS off an A*), and I've only got an A prediction in maths, so I'm a bit worried about how this will affect my application. I mean if its as competitive as I think it will be, I'm not sure how forgiving they're gonna be that I just missed out on that A* grade... Sighhhhhh, that said I got an A* in GCSE Stats, so hopefully they'll look at that as well...

I emailed them and they said that unless you do have an A* at Maths GCSE you actually will not be considered :O !!
They advised me to retake my maths GCSE to try and achieve an A*!
But best of luck with your application, I'm sure if you really want it you will be able to win them over
