Government responds to second EU referendum petition

Dear,

The Government has responded to the petition you signed EU Referendum Rules triggering a 2nd EU Referendum”.

Government responded:

The European Union Referendum Act received Royal Assent in December 2015, receiving overwhelming support from Parliament. The Act did not set a threshold for the result or for minimum turnout.

The EU Referendum Act received Royal Assent in December 2015. The Act was scrutinised and debated in Parliament during its passage and agreed by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Act set out the terms under which the referendum would take place, including provisions for setting the date, franchise and the question that would appear on the ballot paper. The Act did not set a threshold for the result or for minimum turnout.

As the Prime Minister made clear in his statement to the House of Commons on 27 June, the referendum was one of the biggest democratic exercises in British history with over 33 million people having their say. The Prime Minister and Government have been clear that this was a once in a generation vote and, as the Prime Minister has said, the decision must be respected. We must now prepare for the process to exit the EU and the Government is committed to ensuring the best possible outcome for the British people in the negotiations.

This petition has over 100,000 signatures. The Petitions Committee will consider it for a debate. They can also gather further evidence and press the government for action.

The Committee is made up of 11 MPs, from political parties in government and in opposition. It is entirely independent of the Government. Find out more about the Committee: https://petition.parliament.uk/help#petitions-committee

Thanks,

Say what you will about the initial referendum being 'democratic' and we should abide by it but 4.1 million signatures on this petition is hardly a small number to fob off with an email.
do discuss)

But the 17-18 million people who voted leave dont count then? The country voted, the majority said leave. Simple as. Dont like it, leave
Weren't a huge number of those "signatures" found to be fraudulant?

Did i say that ? No. So dont make up stupid little comments which are blatently not true, not to mention it goes the other way nicely with 16m odd people being ignored.
Ah the battle cry of the hoi polloi 'get out of my country'

I seem to recall a figure of 77000 being thrown around so not good but in the grand scheme not too bad)

e-mail seems perfectly reasonable. Its standard for the way petitions are dealt with. What did you expect?

I more objected to the contents of it then its manner of delivery.

It's the debate that will be more important.

Nothing, thats the point!

The single biggest decision in decades and for decades and to start with they both ran incompetant campaigns where they spent more time smearing each other and lying through their teeth than informing the public who [given googles most searched phrasesafterwards included 'what is the EU' and not to mention that the vote was so close at the end it is easily rgueable it should have been re-done untill one side had a real majority not a trickle..
Sorry I digressed but yes the email was nothing more than the usual PR someone writes on the back of a napkin and tosses away once done without a second thought which given how important this is, is rather uncoupth.
There was a response at least, no surprise in its content. *At least we are in with a chance of being able to remain a significant country if Theresa May becomes PM. If Boris had got in, we would have been in real danger.

You seem a really bright guy so I am astounded by this.

Do you seriously believe that parliament (full of totally out of touch, bubble, establishment politicians held in the profoundest, deepest, disgust and contempt by the electorate) dare overturn this referendum?

It would cause a constitutional catastrophe.

And if they hold a second referendum the bloody nose will be even greater. A bigger majority, caused by annoyance at the answer not being heard the first time by the despised elite.. So what will be achieved by holding it?

We are leaving the European Union. The sooner bitter Remainers reconcile themselves to that the better for our country.

You guys are starting to resemble tin pot African dictators who try to run another election when the first goes against them.

Have some dignity and think of the national interest. You are making fools of yourselves and creating a totally unnecessary recession by talking the economy down so it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

What a pathetic attitude, so you're of the opinion if at first you dont succeed give up and become a sheep? Asmuch as it pains me to mention the 3rd Reich but your attitude is rather similar to the German people who just sat idly by once Hitler was in.

True, im still eagerly awaiting there plan of how the hell they're going to pull Britain out and what then since once its triggered we have 24months after that Europe shafts Britain if it so desires.
Not sure about that despite Boris acting the fool usually he is an exceptionally smart chap and he hasnt tried to strip us of our civil liberties like May or be a rageing homophobe like Leadsome.
Someone tweeted a mildly witty overview of it how theyd vote Cfor a giant asteroid instead:rolleyes:

Let's just ignore the illegitimate "signatories" for a moment and assume every single signature was a legitimate UK resident, you're still not even a quarter of the way to 17.4m who voted leave, come back again when you have your 17,410,743rd legitimate UK signature (from an over 18)

Take out the foreign signatures and you don't even have a qualified the losing side.
