Trying to leran Japanese, any tips or easy way to do this?

open up a japanese book and just repeatedly say "kawaii" and "watashi" to yourself, seemed to work for one of my friends.

To learn Japanese by romaji, the Latin letters in Japanese for first? Most of people I asked said it is always the first step to become familar with this exotic language.
