Anyone commuting Sheffield to York Uni?

Any bits of advice or things I should know but deciding to do this or not?
That's like an hour by car or 2 hours by train. Things to consider:
Are you really going to be bothered going all that way for a one hour lecture or a half an hour tutor meeting?
Are you ok with other students all living together and you living miles away? Makes it difficult to socialise.
Can you afford parking charges at the uni (they're usually very expensive to discourage students from using cars)?
If you have a lecture from 9-10 and another from 5-6 are you prepared to travel to uni and back twice? Or spend all day hanging around uni waiting for the second lecture?

Generally long commutes to uni aren't the best idea but some people do make it work

I dont do it but thats a fairly lengthy commute imo

Time to get to sheffield train station = however long it takes you to get there
train = 1 hour depending on which time you get
york train station to campus (uni of) = about 20 mins

then some time waiting for the bus/train

so you're looking at a minimum of 1 hour 45 mins each way unless you live a couple of minutes from sheffield train station

then if you drives its about an hour each way but you'd be doing about 110 miles per day in driving, thats a fair bit of mileage and wear and tear on the car

Bit far imo. Doable but a might pain in the backside fr early mornings. You would be better off going to Sheffield uni 100%.
Have a car then easier, but ofc theres parking as pointed out above.

I suggest some practice runs and that will give you an idea.

It’s more like 45 mins to 1 hour by train. That’s a good point it’s a long way for a hour lecture. Socialising isn’t really a big issue for me I’ve lived in York for 7 months now and haven’t made lots of friends I don’t really make friends easily so this doesn’t bother me plus i spend most of time talking to my girlfriend just in my room, I’ll be getting the train so parking doesn’t matter and another good point guess I’ll just have to deal with loitering round uni or town. Im just trying to consider options for the next uni year and what would work best for me.

plus all the other time not including the train time, its not 1 hour from a house in sheffield to the uni campus

Perhaps you havent made any friends because you spend most of your time talking to your girlfriend in your room? have you tried joining societies etc?

All true but the money you can save by commuting rather than living on campus is really good

Smaller loan though so probably won't save that much

only if you dont have to pay rent +bills in sheffield (and you get a smaller loan if living with parents) and you also consider the time it costs you commuting into and back from uni, around 3-4 hours a day is a serious amount of time.

Im already in my first year of uni at York im just thinking about next year

Your life, your time and your degree. I do suggest doing the trial runs though. If GF that great id find somewhere mid way.

Would be that bit to far for me.

Leeds you could do.

Not living with parents, I’ll be living with my girlfriend in Sheffield as student accommodation is so much cheaper in Sheffield than York and my loan will still be high

Guess it depends on how much you're in uni then, if you're in 4-5 days a week then I doubt you'll save anything, hell you might end up spending more. My friends in york dont spend that much on rent (in a student house), think most of them spend about 90 a week including bills

but at the end of the day you've just got to do what you thinks best for you, just 3 hours of commuting a day is a bit rough (unless you're only in 2-3 days a week) and I would think you will end up spending more money overall.
