The Dissertation Thread 2018-2019

I noticed it's been about a year since the last thread was started so thought I'd seize the opportunity to start the discussion for what I'm sure will be a fun year without any stress whatsoever.

I study Politics and my dissertation is about why Justin Trudeau and Jeremy Corbyn's respective parties did so well in their latest elections - was it their unusual leadership styles or was it due to other factors? The scale of one assignment lasting an entire year is slightly terrifying but I find this topic really interesting so I'm hoping it'll be okay! For now I'm focusing on literature and considering some research methods before meeting my supervisor for the first time.

What's your subject and idea? And how are you feeling about it at this stage?

Good luck with finishing yours! The death penalty is a really interesting area, if a little morbid!

I have started mine (Business and Management degree). Just waiting for Ethical approval.
@The Empire Odyssey I know this thread is quiet so far but as the 2017-18 one is dying down and this one is being slightly drowned by all the new posts after results day - is there any chance of having this stickied?
Posting in here due to the fact that I have my PhD thesis due next September and motivation will be needed!

I have my MSc Dissertation due next September as I am a part-time student.

I have spent some of the Summer getting prepared and conducting some pilot studies - though my Supervisor wasn't very impressed so now I have to do more. Hoping to get these done before term starts again.

Will definitely find myself here from January onwards... probably moaning!
Hi! My BA illustration and visual communication dissertation is due in early December so I thought I'd start on it this summer while I've got some free time! It's about the illustrative representations of monsters and cryptids :h:
I have my disso for my BA History degree due in around May next year, and I'm doing it on the topic of women's participation in the anti-colonial movements of Algeria and Somalia.

Really excited to do the readings for both topic areas, especially since the Algerian war of Independence offers much to dissect and analyse in terms of gender dynamics in the context of a fierce conflict between guerrilla and colonial forces.

I'm thinking that it will be difficult to find archived documents for both countries, and then paying for translations. However, its worth the challenge to me.

Best wishes everyone!!

My health promotion and public health dissertation is due next year around May. I will be writing about how effective health education interventions in reducing asthma symptoms in teenagers. Right now I am in the research stage, looking for good journal articles.
I am very much a social historian and I am studying refugees as my special subject in year three, so I am hoping to study a particular refugee movement to the UK and responses to them, and identifying new approaches or ways of viewing integration. Alternatively i'd like to interview refugees of their experience as my uni is in a port city so there may be a pocket of remaining refugees still there. I think I may perform a comparative history of the Kenyan Asians who arrived in the UK in the late 60s, with the Ugandan Asians who arrived less than a decade later, who received a much different response.
I have my MSc dissertation due in September. I have already sat an Applied Research module so have already submitted a provisional literature review and received ethical approval.

I've had to compromise a little bit on my methodology as my supervisor didn't want me to do focus groups as she thought I could get more rich data from conducting semi-structured interviews... I hope she is right.

My study is looking at Revenge Porn.

Good luck with completing it! Definitely an interesting - if unfortunately increasingly-relevant - topic.

Ahhh, thank you!

When I first decided to base my dissertation on Revenge Porn I had a bit of resistance from some of my lecturers as they felt that since I'm employed in the Criminal Justice sector I should do something that encompassed more practice. I'm glad I stayed true to my own idea! Studying part-time its very easy to put the dissertation to the back of your mind but its definitely kept me interested.

Good luck with completing yours! When is it due?

Definitely was worth sticking to your idea then! Mine’s not due till mid-May 2019 at the end of my third year so it’s all just getting started, but I’m aware that the deadline will rush up! At the moment I’m hoping I get a good supervisor - find out in a few weeks - as I think that’ll have quite a big impact, particularly as I need to persuade them to let me completely change topic from my original proposal. But it should be an interesting year ahead - no longer bound by reading lists and actually get to research and more or less make something! Will hopefully be the best part of the degree.
