UCL Applicants/Offer holder questions

Hey all! I'm a current UCL student, and I've realised coronavirus has really limited the amount of information available to potential applicants. I have decided to answer some questions so....fire away! :smile:

Do keep in mind, as I am not apart of administration so I won't be able to give specific advice. Just more general advice/information about student life.

Describe the process

Assuming this is in regards to my application.
So a very abridged version;
I did my A-levels in 2018, had some health issues therefore I ended up doing a gap year to get better results. During my gap year, I had quite low confidence and did not apply to very prestigious universities. About halfway through my gap year I realised what I'd done and on results day there were no viable adjustment places. So, I ended up doing a second gap year and getting into my dream uni.

The application went as follows;
January 15 (yes UCAS deadline) - I applied to the following; UCL, KCL, Royal Holloway, UoLiverpool and Queen Mary
My UCL offer came within 2 weeks (it varies for everyone, do not fret if yours takes longer). It was pretty straight forward but everyone's experience is different.

Student life is great! There's people from all sorts of backgrounds, so making friends shouldn't be an issue. Societies are great too and really inclusive from my experience, although speaking honestly, I have heard of cliqueyness here and there. I think after a while at UCL you kind of find yourself in this London uni crowd so you'll likely make friends with many KCL/LSE students too (plus their sports nights bang haha).
How many clubs are there? And yeah it is.

Loads! The best (in my opinion) would be Ministry of Sound or Fabric.
I think Piccadilly institute is exclusively good for freshers but I'd avoid it otherwise.

I've heard there isn't really a sense of community in UCL , is this true? , also how do i get through 3 years in London without emptying my pockets all the time:biggrin:

Hi :smile: I have some questions so I apologise in advance :P
1) Does UCL have a campus or at least a campus feel? Like do you see other students when you're walking around or does it feel lonely when you're not in scheduled lectures
2) How expensive is it really, like do you feel like you're having to excessively budget? And in terms of transport how do you get around, is the tube and buses too expensive?
3) How diverse is the community? Would you say there's an even mix of home and international students, and students from different areas of the UK, and do people mix together well? (the only reason I ask is because I was talking to an ex-student and she said sometimes it felt a bit cliquey, especially with kids from the same areas of the UK? She did graduate about 5 years ago though lol)
4) Are there plenty of study spaces, and are they nice places to work in?
5) Finally, if you are in second year or above how was finding a student house? Is it super expensive, or really tiny compared to other student houses in the rest of the UK?

I won't lie, probably not compared to other universities and I know in London, Kings is far better off in this aspect. It's a trade-off really, academically I find UCL extremely supportive and the pastoral care during this pandemic was good. Whilst you might not get that sense of 'belonging' and 'community' the only way is try to be as involved as possible with societies. These are really good at UCL and the best avenue for making friends.

In regards to money, I cannot stress how important it is to try secure a part-time job. Yeah first year is meant to be "fun" and working might be added time away from socialising. But I can't stress how ****ty it feels when you can't go out because you're in your overdraft.

Some cost saving hacks (which you may or may not need aha);
- Always predrink and make the most of it because drinks are spenny. There have been multiple Glens vodka days, but all I will say, the experiences I've had with Glens have been nothing short of character building.
- Try cop tickets early because early bird tickets are usually cheaper (popular events like Halloween can go to £50+)
- Be smart with your weekly shop, try not to be wasteful with food shopping.

How long do UCL tend to take to reply to applicants? I haven’t heard of anyone receiving offers yet

1) Yes, unlike other unis UCL has all its faculties at the same campus.
2) Quite expensive, but you've just got to play it right. Tube and buses can be spenny :frown: but a student oyster will get you 1/3 off!
3) Very diverse. International students make up 53% of students so slightly more. It can be cliquey I have to admit. I'm from North-west London and sometimes it feels like we have a gang. Not all people will be like that though. Just got to find the diamonds in the rough.
4) Yes! We have so many libraries - but because of social distancing booking spaces have been tricky for the time being.
5) It's not that difficult. London has so many uni's that its virtually impossible to not find someone to rent from.

Not part of administration so I cant say! :frown: Mine took 2 weeks, but I doubt that's any consolation if you're still waiting on yours.

Good luck!

Okay thank you. I applied mid November but I’m really impatient so I’ve been waiting for a response everyday 😂

Ahh I know the feeling. Hope the wait is worth it! What have you applied for?

Ohh okay, thank you for your reply! Sorry to be a pain, but how did you find it making friends? I'll be applying from the midlands so I don't know anyone from round London, are the majority of UK applicants from London or nearby (like Surrey or something?)

I do find that a lot of UCL people are from London, and funnily from my specific area but this is purely because of the groups I tend to hang out with. There are so so so many people from the midlands so you need not worry and I have plenty of friends from there! I think people mix well at UCL, I have friends from London, but also other parts of the UK and even international. It's nice seeing people from various backgrounds blend together.

Ah its funny how things work out isn't it? Thankyou soooo much for all your help though, I was sorta worrying but this has been reassuring :smile:
Hey! UCL has literally been my dream since I was 14 so waiting for a response on my application is terrifying!!! What would you say is the best thing about living in London?
Are there a lot of black students in UCL? I’m black myself btw.
