It's all well and good having everyone on here saying "YH GO B A ROKSTAR M8!!111one" but let's be realistic for a moment - If you could answer these it'd be alot easier.
1. What % cut are said label offering? 50/50? 82/18?
2. Are they wanting the recorded rights to your music? Is it licensed? If it's licensed how long for?
3. How long is the deal worth? 1 album? 2? 3?
4. Are they providing touring advances?
5. What is the press allowance?
6. Do they want % of merch/tour money? I know some labels take 50% of merch and 20% touring generated money.
7. Are they contributing to recording?
8. What have they deemed as recoupable expenses?
9. Are they going to own the trademark of the band? (Your name)
10. Is this an international label? Who is the label?

Does it always have to be about money?
Ultimately happiness is more important than money, so long as it pays the bills and makes you happy I say do it!

To the OP, can you defer your entry for another year? Perhaps you can go on tour for a year and see how it goes. If it's not working out then go to university?
For me personally I would probably go with the band if there was a good chance it wouldn't crash and burn. If I was faced with £9k fees then I would seriously consider going to university on mainland europe on one of the courses in english.

Also, any chance of linking to your band, you never know, maybe I'll come and see you if you're touring up my way
Manitude, for some reason it won't let me quote your post :s

Actually I wasn't asking those questions with the effect of seeing if he was going to get rich, but to see how much debt him and his band would be in, I've spent the past year working in the industry for & with the labels in the progressive metal circuit and have dealt with contracts on numerous occassions, labels are very very clever with the way they word things, hence my questions. A label is a business, not a charity.
If this is what he wants, he needs to know his back is covered, that's all i'm aiming to do.

I'd chose the record deal. If it doesn't work out, you'll go to a uni. Universities won't run away (although they will be more expensive), record deals might. How many people get this chance? If I were you and would chose to go to uni, I would always ask myself "what if...?".
There was a band in my secondary school who in their last year of sixth form got offered a record deal. The decided against it and went to university instead. A mate of mine has drum lessons from the drummer of that band. He says they regret it as they always think, what if...?

Don't turn down your dream

Hey guys, i'm on a gap year currently and 2 weeks ago (been celebrating since, haha!) my band got a record deal from an extremely good record label that mainly specialises in our genre (hard rock). However I am unsure what to do and my family are all saying I should go to university as education is the key to success (or so they say) But I do wonder whether they just don't want me going on the road as it isn't seen as a healthy lifestyle obviously!

I'm supposed to start touring as a back up band, mainly for marketing purposes for a major band and then rerecording our album so it's at the quality the record label require. They said we would be then touring on our own if all goes well as we have a very large fanbase. I'm the lead singer and rhythm guitarist if that's relevant.

But the fact is I have a defferred offer from a top university (not very top, but in the top 10) and I worked my *** off to achieve this! Also if I turned it down if I wanted to go to university it would cost £9000, basically 3 times as much! That puts me off.It would break my heart to decline this, but then again i'd love to be a rockstar and to be honest would have no luck with women any other way, I mean I lost my virginity to some random groupie and only had one girlfriend before we gained a large fanbase...

So what do TSR think I should do? Back out of this record deal and go to university? Take up the deal and back up this band?

my minds in a mess and after partying for about 2 weeks my mind has settled and I have got seriously thinking about my future and my family are dead against me being a rockstar :frown:

If this is real and it really is a big label and everything looks kosher and you really want this then I would go with the record deal. You could apply to uni anytime but a record deal might be something you only get one shot at.

Go with the bloody band, you can go to university whenever. If the band doesn't work out, go to uni then.
be in the band uni will STILL be there.
Knowing someone in a similar situation, although a different music genre, I will give you the same advice I gave them. Go to university, get your degree and then persue music as a career. The industry is a lot of luck as well as skill, and fact is it could all fall through. If it does, then a degree is a much better thing to fall back on than A-Levels. Try to persuade the rest of the band to do the same - work together in the holidays. You seem to have a leading role, so should be able to talk this up to a reasonable level. I know it seems like looking a gift horse in the mouth, but this is the best decision for you in the long term.

Go be a rockstar OP .

OK so people are saying that the OP should go to uni first, and while I can understand their point of view, what happens if the OP gives up the record deal, goes to uni and doesnt manage to get whatever degree he would be studying for?.He would have lost out all round.........

Uni can wait.......go and live your dream

I would stick with uni. Too many rockstar wannabes !
Do it man! If your heart says band and your brain says uni, follow your damn heart fool!

Chances like that are usually once in a life time, uni will always be there...

Don't forget these pearls of wisdom when you make it big and need a roadie for your world tour

Armin van Buuren's got a law degree.

Handy to have something to fall back on if he ever stops being a multi-millionaire top trance DJ.

ultimately it's up to you, but i'd say go for music definantly
Go be a rockstar and go to uni later!
Can you link us to your music? You should want to expand your fanbase!
I think you should go for the band. You can always return to education if it dosn't work out.
But if being in a band is your dream you don't want to throw this chance away, even if you go to uni and get a good job you will always be wondering 'what if?'.
study part-time?

Apologies for late reply - I had no idea that you had written anything.
I can see where you're coming from.

And did you get to play with any of the big prog metal bands :colondollar:

dont go to uni and end up thinking 'what if' for the rest of your life

stick with the band, if it doesnt work out, at least you'll know, and know that you gave it your best shot
I don't know why, but I find it really funny that a rock musician is on TSR

You can go to university in the future forget about the fees, yes its a lot but you dont pay it up front. Follow your heart, do you want to be a rockstar? If yes go for it. If it falls through you can always go to university later. Look at Ellie Goulding, she left University in her second year after getting a record deal. Im sure she doesnt regret it!
