Hey! So you will need to contact your chosen University if you already have your grades and then they will advise re references. Clearing is already open so you could get in touch now and get a head start on this

You ring universities with your grades and they will advise you whether they are offering you a place. References arent usually asked for as everything is very rushed and the object it is to place students into unfilled spaces. To use clearing you would already have a normal ucas application and that would include your reference.

Is it a necessity to ring them? Isn't just applying via UCAS just sufficient? Hence my question on whether the universities themselves receive clearing applications

No, you can't refer yourself to a uni via UCAS without getting a verbal offer first. Otherwise you may just be wasting your time sending the app to them only to get rejected after X amount of days.

Clearing calls are very straightforward, they'll just run through your achieved grades and details. It's not an interview and it's nothing to worry about.

Is an offer given via email sufficient, or does it have to be a verbal offer

Most uni's won't give you a clearing offer via email. But if they did, then hypothetically, yes, you could refer yourself to them off the back of it.

Exactly this ^^^

You are best off using their contact forms and emails to request if they will make an offer via email but usually you will need to call them to receive the verbal offer. The call is nothing to worry about and the team will do their best to always help you the best they can.

Many of the clearing offers are made on results days. Universities have dedicated clearing lines with extra staff brought in to deal with a huge amount of phone calls. The staff will be dealing with phone calls so wont have time to deal with emails. For something urgent a phone call is always better than an email and for clearing a phone call is certainly better. By the time they respond to your email the places may well be filled especially for popular courses. Last year nearly all RG universities filled their spaces on results days.
Just to balance the above.

Quite a lot of universities will send clearing offers (with instructions on how to accept the offer and any caveats and terms of the offer) by email.

Most universities will have a database keeping track of who has been made an offer (without that they have no way of verifying that applicants adding them on ucas are clearing offer holders) and that database will normally be capable of sending offer emails.

I would personally be quite sceptical of a university refusing to confirm a clearing offer in writing along with verbally. If they’re unable to send an email then you have no reassurance that they have a record of the offer they’ve made you and so adding them as your clearing choice on ucas is a risky option.
At the very least if you have a university making a verbal offer but refusing to send confirmation via email then I would recommend that you ask for and write down the full name and job title of the person on the phone making the offer. Or even better ask for their permission to record the phone call so you have a record of what they say about the clearing offer they’re making.
