gap year-deferred entry?

Hey guys! so basically i am in 5th year sitting my highers and will be applying to university after the summer. However i have wanted to go on a gap year for as long as i can remember... i was thinking about a deferred entry to university (perhaps law at glasgow uni) but apparently they will probably reject you if you apply for a deferred entry? My second problem is that i have noone to go with :frown: Dont get me wrong, i have friends! but they all want to go straight to uni...they dont see the benefits of a gap year, so that leaves me stuck. I want to go travelling either to South America (brazil, argentina etc) maybe to do some volunteering or South Africa. I have been looking at all of these groups but they are all so planned out. I would like to be a little spontaneous and not have to follow a timetable :frown: But then i dont want to go alone either...WHAT DO I DO?!?! Please help guys, any advice would be amazing, thanks!!!

Unis won't necessarily reject you because you apply for deferred entry. Some unis like it more than others, and some subjects are better at it - maths, for example, isn't great to take a year out from.

Most unis are fine with deferred entry, especially for a more arts course like law where you are likely to gain a lot from a year. They usually have something on their website about their policy on it, or you can email and ask. They will prefer if you have a productive plan for your year, such as travelling or especially volunteering, which you should include in your personal statement.

it depends what you want to do/where you wanna go but on sites like bunac and ozintro (who specialise in Australian gap years) they quote a large percentage of travellers travel alone. you make friends on the way , i think they say 60% travel alone x

You're welcome  I am going with Project Trust who are amazing for a full years volunteering, but you are limited with where you can travel as you have to stay fairly close to your project so you are stuck within a few countries. Maybe look at Bunac, STA or another company that organise group trips for a few months

Yeah I guess travelling alone wouldn't be too bad! I guess it would just be a little scary at first!!

Ah yeah project trust is supposed to be amazing! But I think I would rather be more spontaneous (not completely though) yeah STA has quite good trips, I'm just a bit worried about going with random people :/

Hi amber_sss,

I applied to University of Glasgow with a deferred entry to study law and was accepted, so it is possible. In your personal statement it is important to mention what you are planning to do on your gap year and how it will be beneficial for you. The reasons can range from traveling and voluntary work to sorting out finances and working, etc. For law, gap years are often even encouraged. Of course, it is good to check with the university first.

I got 38 IB points, I'm not entirely sure how that translates to Highers, unfortunately.:s-smilie: I applied in the 2012 cycle so requirements may have changed since then.. Yes, you can usually find an email address for general enquiries in the Contact section of the universities' sites.
