DSA - ASAP Equipment Help!

Dear All,

Today (03/05/13) i had my "Needs assessment" which lasted about 2 Hours. He asked me a lot of different questions and he has recommend this equipment, i am dyslexia.

Equipment:
Digital Voice Recorder.
Printer + Scanner in one.
Software - To help me read and write.
Laptop - Unsure which one.
£150 Towards Books a year.
£150 Towards Ink a year.
£150 Towards Internet a year.
Proof reader at University.

Now he never mentioned anything about travel costs? am i entitled to it?. I Will living in hall but i am unsure which hall and how far it is from the campus.

Also i asked for a Macbook laptop and he said he will contact the uni teacher to confirm what i will be mostly working on in the course i will be doing at Loughbrough university: Information Management and Business Studies.

Also am i entitled for any other equipment? such as external keyboard and mouse or monitor?

The report hasn't been sent of to SFE yet.

Thanks

You'd only get help with travel costs if your disability meant you wouldn't be able to travel by public transport. Even then it's only the difference between the cost of public transport and a taxi.

When I was given a laptop, I was also given an external mouse and keyboard. You wouldn't get a monitor unless it was recommended. In my case, they recommended one in my second needs assessment.

I was given a Samsung. But this was 2009; so you may get something completely different.

DSA laptops are recommended by spec. You will probably been recommended a DSA-WKH 15 which is core i3 processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD. It can be any make or model to meet this spec. Suppliers tend to use Toshiba , Samsung and Dell machines.
The Laptop I have just received is a Asus X55c with 320 HDD, 4GB RAM and a i3 Core Processer. This laptop came with Windows 7 HP, plus all my other dyslexia software.

Sorry yes, 320GB HDD is standard not 500GB as i said above.
Just wondering if anyone knows if the dyslexia software we receive with DSA is compatible with Windows 8? Cheers in advance.

Yes, all of the main software is supposed to be compatible. I think that texthelp are bringing out version 11 with a new Win8 like interface.

You are correct. I have updated to W8 and all the specialist programmes are working well. I don't understand why everyone is complaining about Windows 8. The computer is working a lot quicker using Windows 8 than it did using my old Windows 7 HP.

Hi thanks for this information can I ask how long it took to arrive to you from the assement date and when SFE made the decision ?

It took around a month from date of my assessment until when I got my Quote Approval paperwork through from SFE (which also included Easter). It then took them two weeks from ordering my equipment, for them to come to deliver and set it up for me.

Hi Njones, I received my final report and they have recommend me a Laptop, just wondering is their anyway of getting a macbook, my reason for this is that am I very familier with the MAC OS as i have used it for more than 8 years.
you won't get one allocated unless it is a necessity of your course to use Mac only software. You can get a Mac if you make up the difference in cost.
