It can be a good starting point when teaching vocabulary, so that they can get used to the way certain sounds appear on paper, but I personally try to stay away from too much focus on phonemes. This is simply because some groups of letters have so many different sounds.

I find it much more effective to use thee whole word approach. Children have a much higher capacity to retain large amounts of information than adults and generally pick things up much faster.

I am currently an ESL teacher, so naturally I do spend more time looking at phonics, but with native speakers I don't believe it is the best way.
