How important is a placement year ?

Hi,
I need to choose between Bristol, a university with good reputation, which doesn't offer a placement year in the BA course, to Sussex, which seems to be lees highly regarded, but does. I also have an offer from Birmingham. but to the 3 year BA course. How important is it to have a placement year in the course? Any feedback about these universities in general?

Depends what career your interested in doing...

I'm a CS student, not Psych, but I highly recommend it. It can drastically increase your chances of receiving a job at the end of your course, especially from whoever you've done work for, because you have an entire year of real-world experience which, believe me, can teach you more than all 3 years of university combined. It also helps you decide exactly what you want to specialise in after uni and whether it would be beneficial to do a masters or go straight into work.

Its more important for applied psychology (e.g. educational, clinical, occupational), rather than if you want to go into research / other jobs. I mean it can be useful for anything, but your unlikely to be paid much for doing it, so its particularly useful for doing things you couldn't otherwise do after you graduate. So many unis will have good contacts so you can get good experience in clinical settings or whatever, which may be harder to do after you graduate.

It can be useful if you want to do a year in industry too, but quite often your paid much less in a placement for doing the same work graduates would do.

It really depends what the placement is. But generally speaking, I'd say it would be a really good idea. You'd have a years experience that maybe a lot of graduates nationwide wont have. Not only that, but you would get a break from education which could be really good for your wellbeing.
