Which ones have you heard mate? I went through a phase that lasted a couple of years where I was listening pretty much exclusively to him and looking for little bits that were unreleased or other side projects he did (he is my favourite artist ever). Albums are usually best listened to start to finish but yeah I agree Ziggy is a Rock opera and that one in particular is best in one go all the way through.

I ranked his albums a while back, and Ziggy was 7th for me (behind Low, Heroes, Station to Station, Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory & Blackstar).

Haha the part you put in bold was actually referring to the bunch of records my grandma gave me which has tons of stuff from the 50's to the 90's, as for Bowie I've heard bits and pieces from all his albums I guess, but I haven't heard them all properly. The ones I have heard properly (from start to finish numerous times) are Heroes, Young Americans, Blackstar, station to station, Ziggy Stardust and Low. I think I might spend tomorrow just listening to all his music, there's just so much and it doesn't help having live versions/remasters because although most of them aren't as good as the originals, a few of them actually are

But wow, with his entire collection I can bet those few years didn't get boring for a second, it's a huge library and it really never gets old. With artists like Bowie, it's almost a crime to not appreciate the entire album since they intended for the songs to be part of that bigger picture which you can't just ignore. I really love Heroes, it's just one of those albums I can put on and enjoy the whole thing throughout. I've listened to him for a long time but lately i have been getting into a lot of his stuff (I hadn't heard all of young Americans and Low until Saturday) so yeah, I had nothing planned tomorrow but It looks like I'll be spending the day going through his music  When I'm done I'll be sure to look for your ranking and comment what I think
Anything by Kate Bush, Michael Jackson, Nina Simone, David Bowie, Elton John, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac SO MANY
But I must say I am appalled no-one has posted this absolute banger yet

Yeah you've heard most of the best material then imo. Just Hunky Dory/Aladdin Sane/Scary Monsters that I would really recommend and maybe Lodger, the last really good thing he did up to The Next Day for me was probably Absolute Beginners, then it all went downhill until his comeback. Also seeing as Heroes is one you really like, if you have never heard Iggy Pop's 'The Idiot' I would get that too, that was pretty much Bowie's he did for Iggy Pop.

But wow, with his entire collection I can bet those few years didn't get boring for a second, it's a huge library and it really never gets old. You will probably disagree with a few but I'm sure you will really like the ones I named even if you don't agree with the order of them.

Thanks. They're not necessarily their best known songs mentioned (although sometimes are). For the huge artists I assume people will know many of Madonna's and David Bowie's say so even if I like them I won't necessarily have mentioned them. I like all the songs on my list.

Arguably one of the greatest 80-like songs that was actually written in 1991 is Walking in Memphis by Mark Cohn (the original and best version).
Also Learning to Fly by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers (1991).

I could literally write pages of all the great, memorable, 80s songs. There are loads of indie-ish acts I haven't mentioned (I missed out The Smiths). Some from film soundtracks. Some relative one hit wonders. Many people would think of the likes of Whitney Houston, or 80s resurgence of 'bubblegum pop' e.g. Bananarama, when they think of the 80s and I'm no different- some of their songs were great. Kylie, Sonia etc.

Others like 80s 'hair bands' but they were a sign of decline, a commercialisation of the spirit of the 70s, for me.

The spirit of the 80s only really started to end when the 70s, and indie garage rock, became more of an influence, which was around 1993 but Nirvana started off the process in a way which is not necessarily a good thing but they were a good band.

Take on me! This song by the norwegian band a-ha in 1985 still gets me. Till this day, it is one of my favorite songs which came from 80's.
I'll add to my earlier post.

Haircut 100- Fantastic Day
Transvision Vamp - Baby I Don't Care
MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This
Fine Young Cannibals - Baby Don't Look Back, Good Thing
Blondie - Heart of Glass
Simply Red- Holding Back The Years (the Picture Book album version as the introduction to it is more touching, although the single
version is produced to sound more rich in the rest of the song)
Clash - Rock the Casbah
Talking Heads - Once in A Lifetime

Synthy, very depressing, although atmospheric, songs like 'Drive' (Who's Going To Drive You Home Tonight) by The Cars were in fashion in the first half of the 80s. Things took a generally more optimistic swing from the mid 80s onwards.

70s? Though a great track and the album it is from is top notch too.
I'm going to give this song, from 1976-as one of the songs (one of many) that came from the Disco Era, but yet, had a big impact on the sound of the 1980's

Which leads to the types of harmony, found for example, in these 80's hits:

Man I love her, such a great voice. Even hearing her talk. YLIK is one of my favourite songs ever.

Since you mentioned Apollonia 6 and Sheila E, do you listen to them much? For me that stuff just sounds so 80s, the weird synths and funk, and the drums (I'm assuming is the LinnDrum, guessing because it was used on so many tracks in pop music back then, the 1999 album especially has this sound to it).

In sticking with music soundtracks from the 1980's for this post, this one is from Streets of Fire, as performed in the movie (but was sang by Dan Hartmann)

and I guess this one predicted the internet age, social networking, dating, etc. (smile)
