NOT Including footnotes in an essay?

Hello everyone,

So, I've just finished two January essays (I study American Studies with Film, by the way), and now I'm just concerned about footnotes in an essay. In my American Literature module, including footnotes was a prerequisite for the essays. However, in my other modules, I didn't include any footnotes, just a detailed bibliography. The reason why this is, is because when I used footnotes in my American Literature essay, Word would just create a great big gap between one page and the next. It was incredibly frustrating. And in one of my other modules, I didn't include footnotes, but I achieved a 66% anyway, which I was content with. But I'm not sure if this is to say that I can get away with it. So, I'm just asking whether footnotes is compulsory or a matter of choice? And in terms of the gap that Microsoft Word creates, how can I resolve this, so I can include footnotes easily in the future? Thank you!
