To be honest, I didnt actually notice that I'd hit his car 
(I was reversing really slowly and thought I had just stopped cos I'd braked too much!) he had been watching from upstairs and ran down to see what damage I'd done.... BUT I have learnt an ethical lesson for next time and I will always stop if I realise I've done some damage. Not fair on the other person to sort out your mess.
