I've been told that it depends on the subject you're applying for. Say you apply for philosophy and get an A at A level, but say you got average grades at GCSE in other subjects, the GCSE results won't really matter because they're not relevant to the subject you want to study.

On the other hand, if you're applying for a subject such as history and you got a C at GCSE, and an A at A Level, you may lose the place to another candidate with a higher grade at GCSE.

It's not all about academic results though, try to get a lot of extra curricular activities/ work experience etc.
