Hey, When I was training and looking for my dental nursing placement I found it much better to go in to practices and supply them with a CV rather than phoning them. This lets them know some more about you and they will have a better opinion off you face to face. They could also want to interview you as a trainee. If I was you I would go in to practices and ask for the practice manager and hand over your cv. This also shows that you want it more than just calling in to the practice.
