I remember finding a tool that allowed you to compare the living costs, tuition fees, etc, at different universities, but I haven't been able to track it down again. Does anyone have any pointers? Thanks

Excel spreadsheet
Your personal diary
A personal finance type budgeting app

Colour code everything. Keep track of the information you come across online. Write down everything on a plain sheet of paper etc or on a Word document. For example blue for long term costs, red denotes food related fees, yellow is for accommodation expenses, green represents short term finances.
