Hi, I am hoping to study law with Spanish at university and I am currently in Lower sixth. What do you think I could be doing which would enhance my personal statement?

Hi,

So some of the things I did were watching as many films as I could in the language (I did Spanish A-Level too) and as part of my IRP I did the independence of Catalonia and its legal implications so I would suggest maybe start thinking of an IRP topic that is slightly legally/politically. A good series to watch is 'Two Catalonias'.

I also made sure I read some books about the French legal system and in my personal statement I only mentioned it in a line or two, the differences and similarities between the two. So if you could find any accessible books on the topic then make sure to have a read.

Finally, as more of a personal point, make sure you are always tip top with your grammar and have everything committed to memory - it means you will find the workload a lot easier when you get to uni as it's tough to juggle everything as it is so make sure your grammar is on top form as well as all your vocab and topic knowledge etc.

Hope that helps

Hi! This isnt really a law based question, just a more general one! I have an unconditional offer for law but Im trying to find out what its like living by campus and travelling into the city centre for shops etc. How do you find this? Do you enjoy the city?
Any help appreciated!
Hey! This isn’t about law as I’ll be studying philosophy and theology but I was wondering if you could tell me how academic and prestige the uni is overall. I’m stuck between notts and durham and it’s hard to get an idea given I haven’t been able to see them IRL? What’s the universities reputation like? Thanks so much ))

Hi!

First of all congratulations!! Notts is super competitive so well done for getting an unconditional!!

Nottingham's campus is honestly in my opinion the most beautiful campus in the UK. It is incredible. So many green open spaces, halls are all quite close together (makes socialising really easy) and all the core amenities you need are in the Portland building or literally about a 10-minute walk off-campus. We have a Spar shop for all the basics, Boots, Cafés, Bars, Clothing shops, Blackwells and loads of places to chill with your mates

If there isn't what I need on campus and I have to go into the city, it's super super easy, and a pleasant experience. You can take the tram into central and it gets you there in like 10/15 minutes so super quick. The city itself is really nice and is always super clean (something which shocked me haha). The nightlife (or what I've experienced of it) has been insane despite clubs not being open and it's actually relatively cheap.

When I was applying to uni I was convinced I wanted to be in a city and not on a campus as such but the fact I get the best of both worlds in Notts is great. When you're studying law it (obviously) gets really tough and I think if I was in a city, my stress levels would be intensified!! Walking to lectures in a morning up the Downs or to the library is such a pleasant experience and really makes me glad I chose Notts!!

Hope that helps

Hi!

Nottingham prides itself on its employability prospects. One thing you are sure to get out of Nottingham as opposed to other universities like Durham is a more well-rounded education. We are uni of the year for sports, we have WAYYY more student societies (academic focussed and others too).

Nottingham over the past few years has become even more prestigious than it was and of course, you have to remember, we are a Russell Group university, something which is valued incredibly by employers. The research output of Nottingham is second to none and as cheesy as it sounds (I'm sure you've heard this at every open day) you really are taught by people who are leading in their field of research. One of my lecturers is a judge in the Supreme Court in Greece and puts out loads of research which I have used in my essays. I thought when I applied to Nottingham it would be easier compared to Durham/Oxbridge but in actual fact, I have found myself working just as much as my mates in those universities. It definitely won't be easier but it's a great challenge. The one criticism I have of Nottingham is that there isn't a constant 24hr library at the mo (because of Corona), other than that, it's insane and a great uni!

You definitely shouldn't base your choice on academics alone as that is not what will ultimately put you in the best stance when it comes to looking for employment. You need to show that you are well-rounded and you will definitely find that easier to do at Nottingham!!

Best of luck

Aw that's brilliant news! I'm so glad you have chosen Nottingham, I m sure you will have the most amazing time here!!

I've been in Derby this year and it has been an amazing experience. Th top halls I would recommend are Derby, Cripps, Hugh Stuart, and maybe Cavendish but the ones I would say try to avoid are Rutland, Beeston, and Florence Boot.

The fact we have catered halls actually kind of replicates that collegiate system which they have at Durham so if that's something you feel like you would have waned, we kind of have it at Notts!!

Best of luck
Hey Im trying to find an accomodation near the medical campus k was going to do Cripps/high but I'm from South Asian from London and I'm worried that the accomidation might now be very diverse so I guess I'm a bit worried about whether I will be able to make freinds. I dolove the idea of catered hall though, eating dinner together it seems like a really cool and unique experience to have. Would you say the catered accomodation is diverse and also what would be your recommendation for accomodation close to the medical school and that is fun with nice people and perhaps more urban.

Don't worry. Nottingham is very diverse and there are loads of people who you will get on with regardless of which accom you are in. Catered is so much fun and is how I wanted to do my uni experience like you say eating together is such a nice end (or start) to your evening. I think you bond with people more this way as well as you can have 8 to a table so there are always people you can sit with!!

I don't think you necessarily need to be very close to the med school (the closest on-campus halls would be Cripps/Hugh Stu/ Lenton/Derby - probably in that order). My mate does medicine and is in Derby with me and she manages to get there easily.

I would definitely say Derby but I guess that's just from my experience. The rooms are actually pretty spacious and the hall itself is ace. We have a hall bar (burgers and booze pretty much), it's very central to where everything is, it's always known as being one of the more lively halls and its setting is really nice too. I'm in the refurbished block so the video they have on YouTube showing you round is actually quite outdated as none of the rooms look like that anymore, they're far more modern and generally nicer!

Lenton is equally nice and is quite close to Derby. It's big and also has a hall bar (i think) but overall I would just say Derby is better as it is more central on campus and it's on the Downs. Practically, it is closer to the Portland building, to lectures, and generally where everything happens so if you have the choice, defo go Derby and you won't regret it!

Okay thank you so much! Also can you tell me more about the tram line and bus services like does she just walk or does she use the tram to get there and how long it takes to get to the medical campus and how much it costs if you can xx

Ok so I think she just walks there (takes about 10mins) and if you're wanting to take the tram, technically speaking you are supposed to pay and it's £1.10 or something like that everytime you do want to use it, but nobody ever checks your tickets so most people don't bother buying them! It's the same for going into city as its a bit too far to walk (i think it takes like 50mins/1hr) but the tram only takes 10/15mins)

all my lectures are based in jubilee campus but it is more lively in the main campus. do people usually live on main campus and commute to jubilee when they have lectures or would that be Time consuming?
