Postgraduate Accommodation

Hi Guys,

So I am a 28 year old New Yorker, who will be attending the University of Sussex starting in September for my postgraduate degree! Hopefully will see some of you on campus in the autumn. Since I am a bit older, I would prefer to live on my own in a studio or a one bedroom. Preferably, I would like to more in downtown Brighton and commute to school. Does the university offer these options? If I go this route, would I be placed with other postgraduate students around? No offense young guns, but my days of constant partying until 4am are over, and I would like a little quiet at night. Also, if I go the private route, are there any buildings designed for students you would suggest?

Thanks,

Joe

Hey Joe, thanks for your question and congrats on the offer!

As an undergraduate I unfortunately can't provide any insight from personal experience, but I'll try my best to shed some light on Brighton housing

The university does manage a few properties off campus but no studios I'm afraid, so you would have to go down the private route. However they can still help by giving advice through their Housing Team and I'd definitely recommend getting in touch, as they'd be able to provide tailored support. Their email address is <[email protected]>. I'm not sure if any areas in Brighton are more densely populated with postgraduate students in particular, but the Housing Team would definitely be able to clarify.

With regards to finding student buildings, if you're looking for university-style accommodation off campus there are a few options available such as IQ (https://www.iqstudentaccommodation.com/brighton?year=2021-22&flatType=Private%20studio) and Scape (https://www.scape.com/en-uk/student-accommodation/sussex/brighton) who both offer studios, but they are fairly expensive. If however you mean more traditional student housing like a standalone studio/flat, there are many across the city to choose from. Property sites such as Rightmove, Zoopla and StuRents have lots of listings, the university has its own property finding site called Sussex Student Pad (https://www.sussexstudentpad.co.uk/accommodation) and the Sussex Students Union has its own lettings agency (https://sussexstudentlettings.com/) where you can look for housing too. From my experience studios are less commonplace than multi-bedroom houses but there are still options out there.

I hope that's helped but if you've got any further Qs, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
