The Student Room Group

Is it worth reporting people who are bending dissertation rules?

I am a final year student at university studying film and TV production BA (Hons). It is more of a practical course so rather than writing a 10,000 word dissertation we make a short film and do a lot of paperwork to support to project. We have a few rules and guidelines etc. and there are a group of students currently who have not followed the rules which makes it unfair for everyone else.

Two of the rules they have broken are:

1. They have paid actors - we're not allowed to pay actors, we can only pay them expenses for food and travel (realistically I think actors should get paid but the university itself has rules as to why actors cannot be paid). The problem with them paying for actors when no one else has is that it puts their film at an advantage to look better because they are able to pay for more experienced actors.

2. We have a rule that we can only work with one 'outside' person, who are not enrolled on our university course, to help work on our films. These people have worked with several outside people to help them with their film which isn't allowed because again it gives other students an unfair advantage. It's a student film, it should mainly be students working on the film, not people with experience in filmmaking already.

These students have been in bother for something else recently and I did make a brief comment to my lecturers on the students seemingly breaking the rules but I think they were a bit aware of this already and wanted to deal with the other problem at hand. They didn't seem to car about them bending the rules due to worrying about the other situation which I will not go into details about.

It is quite frustrating and I know a few other students who share the same opinions as me who are annoyed at these people breaking the rules on their student film when everyone else has followed the rules. The films will be screened to professionals at a gala and their film will potentially look better than everyone else due to them getting much more help and support than was allowed. Is it worth me mentioning this to my lecturers again or should I take it to someone higher? They have basically finished their project now so not sure if it's worth my energy reporting them as I feel like nothing will be done but it's pretty frustrating to see them get away with so much. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Is it even worth my time and effort?
Understandably, you feel frustrated about the situation, especially if you and other students have followed the rules and these students have not. It's also natural to want to take action to address this unfairness.
If you feel strongly about it, you can bring it to your lecturers again and express your concerns. You could ask them what they plan to do about the situation and whether any action will be taken to address the rule-breaking. However, remember that your lecturers may have already addressed the issue with the students, and there may be limitations to what they can do now.
Suppose you feel the issue needs to be adequately addressed or want to escalate it further. In that case, consider speaking with someone higher up, such as the head of the department or a relevant university authority figure. However, before doing so, gather evidence and specific examples of the rule-breaking to support your case.
Ultimately, deciding whether you want to pursue this further is up to you. If you choose to do so, it's essential to approach the situation calmly and professionally and communicate your concerns clearly and respectfully.

Good luck!
I would personally be way too focus on doing my assignment rather than spending my precious time on what others are doing. I would be inclined to use my personal common sense and conscience as to how to go about completing this film dissertation.

However if you feel you are at a disadvantage, perhaps financially or in terms of quality of production then get together and make an official and formal complaint so that the University will have to take disciplinary action. Alternatively look into having the rules amended so you can in good conscience and faith do the same.

Life is unfair but I would mind my future and not be inclined shoot yourself in the foot for trivialities. You may have need of these people perhaps be in their employ one day in addition also references from the lecturers.

Or bite th bullet and do what you need in order to perform at your best for this endeavour even if it involved bend the rules?

Rules are man made and also now made by some women. I would look into the reason the rules were made in the first place. Maybe it s time hey changed.

Real serious matters I would be inclined to report formally are as follows...
If was know that their...
dissertations written by the lecturer or one of the specialist exam sites.
were being giving the answers to the exams
were involved in some kind of sexual coercion
Life is full of people who bend and break the rules or expect to be treated preferentially for some reason or other while the rest of us are meant to stand back and take it.
We don't have to take it of course but taking a stand against such people can be time-consuming, energy-sapping and costly in other ways.
You have already raised your concerns verbally and it appears that this group is known to the powers that be. As previously commented, there may be an ongoing investigation into them which staff will not be able to discuss with you.
You can - in fact should, I think - alert module staff to the inconsistent application of the rules and regs governing the module - if the rules are being flouted in this way, certain loopholes need to be closed. You can do this quite easily through (anonymous) module review. Hopefully other students will do the same. I think this is important for future students.

Yes, I believe the best thing to do is wait until I can review the module and provide my own view on how the rules need to be regulated more thoroughly. Of course as people say, rules are made to be broken, and that’s what these people have done but it doesn’t seem as though my lecturers have been very aware of the bending of the rules. Thank you for your response.

Thank you for your response. Yes, very true, one of my peers also said to just ignore it and continue putting my energy into my dissertation which I am most likely going to continue to do. I appreciate your views, thank you again.
