Who to Choose? Accepting your University Offer

Confused about which universities to choose on your UCAS Track?
Wondering how to decide between your top choices? We are here to help you make up your mind!
Firstly, congratulations on your offers! You are almost to the finish line of your application journey. Read on for tips on choosing between offers.

Conditional vs Unconditional University offers can be one of two types. A conditional offer has details of what you need to achieve to secure your place usually grades in A level AAA, AAB, etc. An unconditional offer is one for which you already meet all the requirements. This is relevant as you likely applied prior to sitting exams or receiving your final exam results. Talk to your advisors, teachers about grades.

Top Tip be realistic, choose a university based on how confident you are on meeting its conditions rather than how much you want to go to a certain one.

Firm vs Insurance You can choose up to 2 universities on UCAS. One is your firm choice i.e., the university that is your top pick. The one you most want to attend based on all factors. The second is your insurance choice or your back-up university. This is where you are most happy to go if you do not meet the conditions of your top choice.

Top Tip when deciding between the two, be strategic. Put down your choices after comparing the offers. Ideally you may want to choose a university with a lower grade requirement as your insurance in case your grades aren’t as competitive as you hoped.

Subject vs University Your top priority is applying to places which offer you the degree of your choice. Once, you have received offers, it is time to look beyond the degree. Consider comparisons between your choices based on data such as student satisfaction, employability, amenities, cost of living (major city like London vs a smaller one like York), industry partnerships. Look back to Open Days you attended and what you liked about each!

Top Tip put down your choices after comparing them in all aspects, the following is not an exhaustive list course structure, assessment methods, campus/industrial placements offered, accommodation preferences, city and location, distance from home, tuition fees (international students), etc. Find out more about accepting your offer from Swansea University.

All the best!
