Universities and Social Sciences

hi! i'm an A level student currently studying sociology, politics and french and is keen on going to university. I'm not sure what course I want to do yet, but I'm set on taking the social sciences route (and modern languages). Any tips or advice on universities that take pride in their social sciences department and/or are based in london, surrey, woking...??
Hi,

SOAS is a university dedicated to social science and language degrees. It is located in Bloomsbury, a wonderful student area in Central London.

Feel free to take a look at all the UG courses they have to offer and let me know if you have any questions!

Well, LSE are a specialist in social science courses and so are a good option in that vein. All of their degrees are social science courses in some manner really. Much more limited on the languages side though.

UCL are quite strong in languages, offering quite a wide range of languages rarely offered elsewhere or unique to UCL. They also have a lot of social science options and some very strong departments in those areas (e.g. their anthropology department, and the Institute of the Americas, among others no doubt).

SOAS also have a wide range of languages including many unique to them, and are specialists in non-European languages and usually the best or second best (after Oxbridge) for studying non-European languages. They also have the usual range of social science departments which contribute to those degrees and also have joint honours options with the various languages.

KCL has their political economy department which I gather is quite good, and also the war studies department/section which is unique in the UK I believe? They offer a range of languages too, although I'm not aware of them being especially known for language courses.

Hello!

It's fantastic to hear about your A-level studies and your aspirations for university. It sounds like you're well on your way to diving into the world of social sciences and modern languages.

I studied Modern Languages (French and Spanish) at the University of Surrey. During the same time, I was President of the Politics Society and made close connections with the department. I had the privilege of being deeply involved in various events, including those related to MPs, climate change, and local hustings. The combination of languages and politics allowed me to explore the fascinating intersection of international politics and societal dynamics. My Spanish dissertation delved into the environmental and social challenges faced by Ecuador, specifically analysing how indigenous communities have mobilized together.

I'm now actually pursuing an MSc in Psychology (Conversion). The courses have linked well together as they provide a well-rounded understanding of human behaviour, societal influences, and the intricate workings of the world around us.

I have loved my time at Surrey University, both in terms of academic engagement and student life. If you have any questions about the university, the courses, the student experience, or anything else, feel free to ask. I'm more than happy to share my insights and experiences to help you along your exciting journey

Thanks,

Hi !! Sorry i'm replying really late. Thank you for telling me about your experience! I definitely want to study modern languages at university (French with German ab initio or ab initio Spanish). My top choices are Bath, Surrey, Royal Holloway, UCL, KCL and Bristol.
I'm heavily considering Bath only because I've been to many of their programmes and practically know my way around the whole campus haha, but also thinking of Surrey because we might move their soon and i'm unsure about whether I want to stay in accommodation.
I don't like literature and Bath have the least amount of that in the languages degree, what's the course at Surrey like? What are the typical modules and how's student life?
