Myths about Business degrees

Hi, I’m Kieron Chadwick, Lecturer in Business at Staffordshire University, and today I’m taking over our TSR channel to bust some myths about Business degrees.

Myth #1 There’s no value in a business degree. In addition to knowledge, our business degrees develop crucial skills and behaviours relating to critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and data analysis; that are valued in many industries. Graduates often go on to excel in leadership roles, consulting, entrepreneurship, and more. As a society, over the past few years, we have experienced challenges including COVID-19, and now we're amid tough economic times. In addition, we face long-term challenges such as global warming. These are all challenges that can be helped by business innovation. Our degrees go beyond theoretical knowledge, providing practical experience through internships, industry projects, and networking opportunities, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for real-world challenges.

Myth #2 If I don’t do a degree, I can start earning straight away. While entry-level jobs might provide immediate income, a degree can significantly enhance your earning potential over the long term. It opens doors to higher-paying positions and opportunities for growth. Many of our students go out and get part time jobs to support themselves while they study, which is a great way to top up the student loan income. There are lots of opportunities available, whether it be through the Students’ Union, Unitemps our in-house recruitment agency, or direct with the University on ambassador contracts.

Myth #3 A business degree is too general. Our newly designed degrees in marketing, entrepreneurship, business innovation, finance, sustainability, and resort management are the perfect way to build a foundation of knowledge and specialist skills in your field of choice. Whatever course you choose, our powerful business network in emerging industry sectors both nationally and internationally will provide you with the chance to make connections, engage in work experience, and even get your foot-in-the-door with big hitting organisations around the globe, ready for when you graduate. At our award-winning institution, you will discover modern industries in a modern way, with flexible and focused course design, the latest software and success models, and our brand-new Catalyst building as the base for your business operations.

Myth #4 A business degree is only useful for someone wanting to go into a corporate environment. Business knowledge is applicable across a spectrum of industries. Entrepreneurs, consultants, and leaders in diverse sectors benefit from a solid foundation in business principles. Our courses all emphasise entrepreneurship, innovation, and business sustainability, preparing graduates for success in startups, nonprofits, and various industries.

Can I ask what the dropout rates are for business courses compared to other typical HE courses?
