Is radiography a good degree?

Hi guys, this is my first post so I'll try my best to make it clear. I've applied & began studying diagnostic radiography this year and I'm in my first term. Honestly, I don't know if I made the right decision by picking radiography (it was a last minute decision) over biomedical science because biomed has been something I've been interested for a long time and a course I know I would definitely enjoy despite it's challenges. So what I'm asking any radiographers/students from both sides is: How is it like studying biomed/radiography ? Do you guys enjoy it ? If you guys could go back in time would you still pick the same course or another one? I feel like it's too early for me to regret picking radiography because I haven't done it for a while but a part of me is just really hung up on the 'what ifs'

Welcome to TSR .

The advantage of radiography over biomed is that you are pretty much guaranteed a job at the end of it in the NHS (you will enter the NHS on band 5, which currently pays around £28,407 (a bit more in London)). That can't be said for biomed and you will probably find quite a few mature students on your course who have taken biomed or similar first degrees, and are now retraining in DR. There are lots of career options with DR once you have some experience. In the NHS, you can specialise in a specific form of imaging, or train to become a sonographer (very competitive), or work your way up the bands (with further qualifications and experience) to become a consultant radiographer. Outside the NHS, you could work for a private healthcare provider, become a veterinary radiographer, teach other students, or work for the companies producing the imaging technology. You would also be very employable overseas.

Also, if you're studying in England, are you aware that you get an annual training grant of £6,000 from the NHS Learning Support Fund?

Comes down to what is important to you - do you want to be on the frontlines, directly helping patients every day? Choose D Rad.

Do you want to work in a lab and not be patient facing? Choose Biomed.

There are several people in my radiotherapy department who did Biomed or Biochem as a first degree, who immediately followed it with a Radiotherapy degree because they realised they wanted to do option 1 not option 2.
