Uni degree advice

Hi there I’m applying to university this year but I’m not sure what course to do. My parents thinks that because I don’t know what to do I shouldn’t go to university at all and that it will be a waste but I feel like I would be better off doing a degree like marketing where it’s well respected, easily applicable and has a high salary. What do you guys think?

You have to know where your passions lie. What subjects have excited you purely for their subject content and what they are all about.

If you don't know create a short list and do all you can to explore those subjects, and what the likely career options are afterwards. When you have an idea apply. If you study a course on someone else's say so and find you don't like it, three or four years is a very long prison sentence tied into a subject that you have absolutely no interest in.

I wouldn’t say marketing jobs have a high salary. Entry level jobs are paid a similar amount to most entry level jobs.

Have you studied marketing at all? Done research into the topics covered in a marketing degree?

Thinking a subject is well respected isn’t enough motivation to get through 3+ years of primarily independent study.

Why don’t you consider going into a few open days of the university your interested in explore the facilities and the methods of teaching to offer as well as work out from the curriculum prospectus to what they have to offer for example.
Career wise I don’t think it’d be right to take onboard our advice because there should be no need to stop you from achieving certain ambitions and dreams and careers of that you hoped for

Hello 😊

Coming from someone who also didn't know which course to follow, I understand how making a decision is hard.

If you are interested in marketing, I can offer you a personal view of this field since it's my area. Marketing is an extremely broad course and usually covers themes such as sales, strategies, research, digital marketing and other areas. This would definitely offer you a wide range of job opportunities, but I must say that although it's an easier course compared to others, it might be overwhelming if it's not a field that you enjoy.

I would advise you to maybe make a list of things that you enjoy doing or find interesting. After, you can either search for an education in those areas or match some jobs to those areas of interest and see what courses are compatible.

You can also try and attend a few open days at some universities, as it will allow you to see all the different courses and find something that interests you. University of Surrey offers many Open Days throughout the year, you can find out more here: https://www.surrey.ac.uk/open-days.

Remember, if you do pursue a course and you end up not liking it, you can always change your mind and try to find a different one.

Hope this helps,
Jénifer

What about law? It's well respected, interesting and you don't necessarily have to be lawyer, you can go into any industry that doesn't have a specialist degree requirement so you could even go into marketing with a law degree
