It's because different rankings use different criteria, so universities are going to fare differently on different rankings.

It depends how you rank them. I love this debate. Students put so much emphasis on ranking when the rest of the world couldn't care less because at the end of the day there are only two things that guarantee success. For most, it is what you can do and for some it is who daddy knows.
The Guardian ranking system puts a big emphasis on outcomes e.g. employability and student experience. World rankings tend to go by money spent attracted through research or other tangible measures that have little to do with how good they are at creating graduates.
