Hey guys,

Just wanted to ask a little bit about these two courses. I had done some research on these two but I didn't exactly get to a conclusion.

I wasn't sure which would be better. I know Marketing is a more general and broad course while Digital Marketing seems a bit more specific.

Would studying a marketing course also get me into digital marketing? Which one is better in terms of pay, flexibility, or other factors?
Digital marketing and traditional marketing both aim to promote products or services, but they differ in the channels they utilize. Traditional marketing involves conventional methods such as print, television, radio, and billboards to reach a broad audience. In contrast, digital marketing leverages online platforms, including social media, search engines, email, and websites, to engage with a targeted audience. While traditional marketing offers a broad reach, digital marketing provides more precise targeting, real-time analytics, and interactive communication, making it adaptable to the evolving online landscape. Ultimately, a well-rounded marketing strategy may incorporate elements of both digital and traditional approaches to achieve optimal results.

Hey there,

As Vaibhav1408 said they both aim to promote products or services, but they just differ in the channels they deliver it. Both courses will offer valuable insights such as best practices’, data collection and analysis, but it depends on your career goals so I think it would be useful for you to look through the modules for each course as well as talk to the course leaders of each course to see which is most suitable for you.

As for pay and flexibility, it varies by industry, skillset, the job role you’re applying for and even the location of the job.

I hope you figure out which course is best for you!

Best wishes,

Paige- UoC Digital Marketing MSc student

It depends what you're interested in really - traditional marketing is much more creative-led while digital marketing is often quite data-driven. Yes, both courses you could get a job in either, as there are lots of transferable skills!

Traditional marketing uses offline channels like TV, radio, newspapers, and billboards. It’s been around for decades and still works well for local reach and brand awareness.
Digital marketing, on the other hand, happens online—through social media, search engines, websites, email, and more. It’s more targeted, interactive, and trackable, making it ideal for reaching specific audiences and measuring results in real time.
Hello there!

It is great that you are considering this path!
There is a bit difference the 2 courses.

Marketing is a broader degree that covers everything from branding, advertising, consumer behaviour, and market research to digital topics.
Digital Marketing, on the other hand, is more specialised and focuses specifically on areas like social media, email campaigns, content creation, and analytics.

If you’re not completely sure what you want to do later on, a general Marketing degree might give you more flexibility, and most marketing courses today already include digital modules. That means you can still go into digital marketing after graduation.
But if you already know for sure that you want to work in the digital space, maybe as a social media manager, content strategist, or performance marketer, then Digital Marketing could be a really focused and practical choice.

Coventry University offers great courses

BA Marketing - https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fbl/marketing-ba-hons/
BA Business and Marketing - https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fbl/business-and-marketing-ba-hons/
BA Advertising and Digital Marketing - https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fbl/advertising-and-digital-marketing-ba/

Digital marketing tends to have more remote and freelance opportunities.
Either way, both are in demand and can lead to exciting career paths, it just depends on how focused you want to be from the start.

Hope that helps!
Good luck!

Digital marketing and traditional marketing differ mainly in platforms and strategy. Digital marketing uses online channels like social media, search engines, and email to reach targeted audiences in real time. Traditional marketing includes print ads, TV, and radio, often with broader reach but less interactivity. Digital marketing offers better analytics, cost-effectiveness, and engagement.
