why is my car insurance so expensive, but my friends insurance isnt?

ok so my problem is,
I am currently on a provisional license (in the UK of course) and literally all of my friends that are driving currently are getting insurance for less than 2k a year. (male, 17 years old, living in west cumbria, same as me) and that is with the same cover I am looking at... comprehensive cover as a named driver on a parents car. I have tried everything, even looked at the same cars and the qoutes are still almost double. this does not make sense... why the bloody hell do i have to pay 3500 quid a year for a poxy 500 quid car when all my mates only pay 1500 a year on the same thing!!!
my postcode is ca28 by the way, which is a grade c postcode area for insurance, same as my friends. they seem to use aviva, i got a qoute from them, 300 a month, they got 150 a month. even those that have passed their test get cheaper insurance than me.
please help.

it depends on a lot of factorsl from where you live, what kind of house you have, where you intend to park your car, what car, what youll use your car for etc. etc. theres no definitive way of answering it im afraid

Are you sure they didn't get insured in their own name TPFT?

Don't get that bit?? even those who passed their test have cheaper insurance than me??

Anyway try cooperative young drivers, its not as bad as you think, they install a smartbox but its not bad at all really, I'm paying £85 per month as main driver, fully comp on a 1.4. 20 yr old male, due for a discount in 2 months ( DRIVING GETS REVIEWED EVERY 3MONTHS)

What is the engine capacity of your parents' car? I bet it's something like 2.0 litre when your friend only has a 1.1.
your litre capacityy is probably higher

your friends may have black box

Depends on the car, where you'll keep it and if you add your parents names onto it - )that usually decreases it considerably) etc,
Mine's only around £1500 for a car with a 1.9L engine?
You'd be amazed at the amount of factors involved in insurance; your parents driving history, what mileage you've put in, how many no claims your parents have etc.

Put simply, I'm on my sister's policy on a brand new Citroen DS3 1.6 DStyle+; my insurance was £1450, she has two years no claims and I live in a grade D area (apparently) doing 9000 miles a year.

My friend has a brand new Citroen C3 1.1 Low-end and lives about 5 houses down from me, on his mums insurance with over 10 years no claims, he's been driving a year longer than me, his insurance is £1900.

It genuinely makes no sense whatsoever; but it's varied completely on a million and one factors. I simply changed where it was parked overnight from Driveway to Street and it went down £50 (which makes no sense). And if I said it was locked in a garage it went UP £500! (WTF).

If you have a sibling (sister pref), it tends to be cheaper to go on their policy than a parents. I guess they think if you're both sharing a car then you'd take better care of it or whatever; and that being on a parents policy usually means you're actually the main driver in most cases etc etc.

The quotes as a named driver on a parents car will be influenced more by the parent's driving record than yours (or your friends,) as they are the main driver of the car. I have a friend with pretty much the same circumstances as me (20, few months short of holding a full licence for 2 years, no accidents) but the quotes her family are getting are higher because her dad wrote off a car in the snow in 2010.

Do you have a different occupation to your friends? What make of car/engine size?

If a named driver, you may not see much of an increase at all when you pass your test. My dad's policy with Admiral which I was named on only went up £17.50 when I passed.

Unfortunately there isn't much one can do with insurance prices as they are, be a named driver if you can and just drive occasionally to keep your hand in so to speak, so that you're not fronting.

I agree. There are a lot of things it depends on.
Try things like insuring a car in your own name rather than being a named driver on your parents insurance, it can sometimes work out cheaper (It worked out half the price for me when i tried it).
Also try different levels of cover, believe it or not fully come can sometimes be cheaper than tpft, ive seen that happen before.
Do all the obvious things like having as many named drivers as possible and changing details like where you keep your car etc.
Companies like admiral, elephant, bell, diamond and aviva have all been cheap for me when getting quotes so try them.
probably an obvious remark but try shopping around more for insurance aswell, these price comparison sites are only so helpful and some of the best insurers [in my experience] werent with them, take me for instance, i was trying to get insured on the parents landrover defender and the cheapest insurance of gocompare was just shy of 6k, i go to the NFU who arent on any comparison sites it drops to 1500 = happy times! so yes look up other insurers some may give you a better deal as some specalise in certain fields and offer cheaper rates for those who go with them , again like the nfu who specialise in working vehicles
