Changing Course Query

Hi guys! I've recently firmed UCL. However, I've recently had issues with the course that I'm going to be studying. I've been accepted into Planning and Real Estate. But after a couple of months thinking, reading up a lot more and having more work experiences, I've realized that it might not be the course for me. Would it be okay if I request to change my course now? Or should I wait until September to request the change?

What course do you want to change to? is it in the same department... and does it have the same entrance reqs?

Out of interest, why had you decided the course is wrong for you?

I want to change to Economics and Geography so no it's unfortunately not in the same department. Although I do fulfill their entrance requirements.

Well there are many reasons why I think the course is not right for me. There's no doubt that I do have an interest in Planning and Real Estate, Urban Planning and Cities. But I figured for an undergraduate degree course, perhaps I would be jumping into a course that is too specific. I have a wide range of interests in developmental economics, environmental geography, mathematical economics and finance, so I'm afraid Planning and Real Estate wouldn't allow me to venture off into different careers since I'm not even sure what I'm really interested in now. Economics and Geography, on the other hand, sounds like the perfect, flexible and interesting course for me. So yeah, I just hope UCL would allow me to switch.

Hm, yeah that makes it slightly more difficult but not impossible...(not that i know anything about admissions at UCL)

Well, i totally sympathise with you actually because I have a gap year job at a Planning and urban design consultancy, a job i got because i thought i wanted to go in to planning as a career. I am still interested in the area, like you, but i thought that instead of specialising early into a planning degree, i would do a geography degree to keep more doors open for me. I am going to do a straight geography Bsc at Bristol, and then, if i still want to and have not changed my mind, do a Masters in planning (or something similar).

So basically, i totally agree with what you're thinking, and i think making the course switch would be a good decision. I even think, if they don't let you switch, you should consider a gap year. £9000 is a lot to spend on a degree you're not 100% sure on

Yeah I agree, if they do not allow me to change I'd take another year off. And I'm an international so it'll cost me $19,900 for Planning and Real Estate annually, which quite frankly is pretty ridiculous. But UCL is seriously a fantastic university. For people who are 100% sure of what they want to do, specific courses like Planning and Real Estate would be perfect for them!

Maybe call them up and ask them if there is any chance of changing before you get there? It's worth a try....

yeah that's a good idea. I'll call them up tomorrow and ask. Hopefully they'll be nice to me.
