English Lit vs Lang AT UNIVERSITY

Haha! Eh well , it's practice!

I've been writing for myself, reading writing blogs etc for about 10 years. Used to publish stuff on wattpad but deleted all that. Tried NaNoWriMo, finished it but didn't enjoy it. I'm not working on anything at the minute but I'll probably start something soon :-)

Jheeze. Well that's enlightening to say the least :/

I can tell you're frustrated by your degree choice man. That's actually really changed my view on things now.
But then, aren't people who do degrees like "International Business" and "Marketing" and whatnot in the same likes as us? My brother was telling me he met Media graduates when applying for his graduate-level positions.

Also, I have an unconditional from Oxford ( Brookes ) for English and Politics dual-honors. What do you think of that in terms of job prospects?

There are a tonne of degrees that don't really go anywhere, so yeah, you might meet people like that. I'm not really a specialist on other degrees, so I can't say for sure what's good or what isn't. I just know that you should only do English Language if you want to do one of the jobs I mentioned earlier (speech therapist etc). But those are obviously really competitive as tonnes of Language grads are applying for them, so there's still no guarantee of anything. The market is crying out for certain things, you have to look at those (and also predict if they'll still be wanted in 10 years time).

I dunno much about Politics as a degree, so I can't help you there, I'm afraid. Oxford Brookes is a fairly well respected university though. It's the best of the ex-polytechnics - I know that as my uni is also an ex-poly. But you could go to the real Oxford, study English Lit or Lang, and still have as few skills to offer an employer as if you went to the worst uni in the country. If you're interested in politics, then research how you get into it, and if it's actually likely you will get into it. I don't want to say give up on a dream because it'd be difficult though; if that is what you really want then go for it 100%. But just make sure you know what you're in for if that's the path you choose, and have some contingency plans.

I don't know if I can share it on here? Is there a rule about it? You can type Zoe's Corner in Google, maybe add blogspot to the search too. It's not great, it's mainly interviews. But there's a series of short stories under the WriCha tab.

Haha, sure! I have like three drafts saved with not much content in them. But I shall have to finish one and update now! If ever there was a time to try get back into the routine it would be this summer. :-)

I was actually gonna start vlogging come september/october and document everything :-P

That was actually my intention last year but then second year of college and uni applications were more demanding than I anticipated. :-P

Hmm, I see what you mean. But then again, English Literature on its face does not seem to relate to media in any sense [apart from being a literary critic]. So why does the degree fare so well in that mode of business?

I know English Lit graduates are very saught for by employers; for example, my friend was just telling me how there were more history and english graduates in the final stages of a Deloitte Internship Scheme than there were finance graduates.

What about English Language though? What kind of stuff do you study?

I have unconditionals for both Lit and Lang and am trying to choose between the two. Also, which is best for a career in media / radio / broadcasting?

I'm assuming you've just finished your A2 exams? How did they go?
