Glasgow accommodation

Hi, just got an offer from Uni of Glasgow, just wondering what the accommodation is like? Is Murano as crazy as people say? Cause I don't want to go a term with no sleep!! :smile:

I'm staying in student apartments this year and I love it! My room is massive (it's a shared room) and there's 3 lovely clean bathrooms between 10 people – more than enough! There's always people willing to come out to town and we have flat parties most weekends. However, it's actually nice and quiet during the week (just as well because I'm constantly doing work!), although I have been out a couple of times on week days and had a party last Wednesday. I haven't been to Murano but I know people (although not very well) who stay there and they don't seem to really have any problems, but it is apparently very rowdy.

I just posted a big response to a similar question here, but Murano is pretty well known as the party halls. It's great for meeting people and there's always something going on, but it can get pretty loud (or so I hear).

I'm currently staying at Murano, it's amazing! we are students so obviously we can't afford to go out every night and we also have work to do so we only go out or drink in the flat about 3 times a week max.
half of murano has been upgraded this year, they've put new double beds in and the bedrooms have brand new desks, wardrobes and carpets etc. The kitchen is white and modern, it doesn't look like student halls at all its too nice! During freshers there were free massive buses from murano to the unions and back home, I'm not sure if the other accommodation has that as they're a lot smaller. Also, I've heard from people I've met at uni that are staying at QM and Cairncross that the night life is lame, they never go out and their flat mates just hide in their rooms all the time. Even if you didn't get on with any of your flat mates in murano the way murano is you would make friends with people in the flat above and below, it's fab for socialising. Sometimes there's flat parties on until like 5/6 which can be a piss take but if you're drunk enough you can sleep through it. Murano is the best!

We had joint buses back to our accommodation so like one bus would go to Cairncross and Maclay or whatever.

I'm at Firhill myself, but I don't think Murano's actually all that bad. Firhill is pretty quiet, but that suits me since I work early at the weekends so I can't go out often. Murano's definitely been the place for people who want to make friends so I'd definitely consider it. Don't be put off by the reviews, I've only heard of one person who doesn't like it there and it was only because she was in one of the dingy old flats with another 9 people who never cleaned up after themselves. The chances of you being stuck like that are slim. I love it at Firhill, but I can't help but feel like I miss out on the social aspect Murano seems to provide people with.

Hi isabelles!

I've just found your reply and I wanted to ask for your opinion about your experience both in student apartments and the experience of sharing a room? These halls are not as named as murano or QM, and I was struggling to find any information about them. Were these apartments far away from the city centre and the clubs?

Hi there! I just thought I'd add in something here. I myself am an alumni of Glasgow University and I lived in Murano Street. At the time, just a few years ago, it was a good experience and certainly one I am glad I had. However, I now work at Bridge House, a 128 bed student accommodation building managed by Fresh Student Living.

We're a small building of studios and 6 bed flats in the West End of Glasgow only 10 minutes away from the University near Kelvingrove Park and the bottom of Byres Road. We are a great alternative for students who are keen to get the halls experience but don't want to live in a huge building of hundreds of students which can feel a bit anonymous and, ironically, it can sometimes be difficult to meet people.

At Bridge House as well as having a gorgeous en-suite room all to yourself, there's lots of social space and private study areas so you can still hang out with your flatmates but we have a real community atmosphere and myself and my colleagues really make an effort to make everyone feel at home. However, it's still small enough that you can make some really strong friendships and feel like you know who you are living with well. We are also staffed 24/7 with a reception during office hours so if you have any problems at all there is always someone who can help you out.

Hi,

I am a third year student and I stayed at QM halls. I'd say they are a good option if you fancy somewhere pretty quiet and people who aren't too wild tend to stay there in my experience. However, saying that, I did do a lot of socialising within my building and go out with people from QM as well. I liked them because I stayed in a room with an en-suite which was really great. However, I have friends who loved Murano and I did go over to Murano quite a lot at weekends when there was less going on at Queen Margaret. If you can make it to another Open Day, I went on tours of some of the accomodation which was quite helpful and helped me make my mind up where I would stay!
