Is Birmingham City University a good University?

Scroll to see replies

I have a mate who left this university after one year. He did networks and hated it as the lecturers were rubbish. I'm delighted he is now studying at a reputable university and enjoying himself. There is no social life at bcu. I went to see him a few times and people were walking on their own. The only groups you will see are the foreign chinese students who seem to stick with one another. Poor courses and poor social life.

And what university is that? It may be because he was studying networks.. The majority of students which study networks at bcu are Chinese. I can definitely recommend the accounting and finance side of the university is pretty good and so are many other departments. Computer networks isn't their strong point, such as any other university which specialise in certain areas.
Find this very hard to understand if I’m honest. Currently studying at BCU after over 20 years IT industry experience and one of the reasons I picked BCU for my postgrad was its good reputation within the industry for educating students in real world skills. My postgrad focuses on Networking but also with Security aspects and I’ve always found the lecturing staff very knowledgeable, with skills obtained from not just following course material but also from real world working life experience from years working in the IT industry. The lecturing staff are very approachable, keen to help you out and discuss issues.

BCU has a good reputation with companies like Cisco, HP, Dell, Microsoft to name a few and the recent refit of the networking labs with updated real equipment is great. This equipment is there for students to get hands on experience of real kit rather that just the virtual access some courses offer. To me as a past employer of network engineers this hands on exposure is critical. Another example, this week BCU have arranged a course with Juniper to put student through the first level of Juniper certification free of charge, giving a step up the ladder of helping BCU students differentiate themselves from our graduates and potentially more employable within the industry.

University is an opportunity, one you have to grab with both hands and I am very much a believer you need to put the effort in to get the most from the experience rather than being spoon fed all the time. If you are willing to do this, you’ll enjoy the time and get a great deal from it.

Let's bear in mind that there are several faculties within Birmingham City University, and there are several campuses. The negative feedback of one or two people from different campuses does not reflect the standards across the entire university.

I can certainly say, in terms of BCU's Faculty of Health, that I've had nothing but positive experiences. As a current student at BCU - formerly a nursing student, turned radiography student (transfer was my personal choice, nothing to do with the course) - I find the campus is brilliant, my course is very well structured, the tutors are very approachable and the content both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. I for one am proud to be a BCU student, and resident of Birmingham City, I've lived here all my life and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

If you want to know what Birmingham and BCU is like, come see for yourself. Don't just take the word of someone else, go to an open day and check it out.

Hi Mr Jay, I've been looking for an opinion from the Faculty of Health at BCU, I was just wondering at BCU, is the student union good and if there is a good social life as a result radiography student.
Thank you.

Hi itsask,

I'm just checking this with our admissions team and will get back to you to let you know roughly how long it might take.
What course are you applying for?

Hey may999,

Congrats on your offer!! :bumps:

The course is both RIBA and arb accredited and our students often get to work with industry and benefit from regular guest speakers.
In your final year you'll also get to showcase your work in a Graduate show where some of our previous students have been headhunted by leading practices including Grimshaws, Hopkins Architects, Hawkins Brown and Glenn Howells Architects.

You can check our our annual review here to see examples of students work and the activities they get involved in.

I used to be student in the same faculty that you would be studying in so if you have any questions at all, maybe about student life or the campus etc just ask away!

All the best,
Lydia

Hi itask,

Our admissions team have advised that it's difficult to say exactly how long it might take for your offer to change to an Unconditional because it's a manual process and so it could be from the next day up to a couple of days but they update the offers as soon as they can.

If you're worried about anything like applying for accommodation, you'd still be able to do this before your offer updates, all you need is your student number.

I hope this helps, and just drop us a line if you have any more queries!

All the best,
Lydia

Hi may999,

Timetables haven't been published yet, you'll get this in Welcome Week. But I'd say in the first year for at least the first couple for terms you'll be in most days, so it depends where you are travelling from?
If it helps, you can see the term dates here.

If you need it, you can find out everything about accommodation here, including how to apply.

Thanks,
Lydia

This is good knowledge...I have been waiting on my application to BCU for the Visual Effects program; this is one of the schools I chose because the student real is excellent, and the ratings on websites like unistats are pretty good... Anyone with first hand knowledge in their Visual Effects department?
