Find this very hard to understand if I’m honest. Currently studying at BCU after over 20 years IT industry experience and one of the reasons I picked BCU for my postgrad was its good reputation within the industry for educating students in real world skills. My postgrad focuses on Networking but also with Security aspects and I’ve always found the lecturing staff very knowledgeable, with skills obtained from not just following course material but also from real world working life experience from years working in the IT industry. The lecturing staff are very approachable, keen to help you out and discuss issues.
BCU has a good reputation with companies like Cisco, HP, Dell, Microsoft to name a few and the recent refit of the networking labs with updated real equipment is great. This equipment is there for students to get hands on experience of real kit rather that just the virtual access some courses offer. To me as a past employer of network engineers this hands on exposure is critical. Another example, this week BCU have arranged a course with Juniper to put student through the first level of Juniper certification free of charge, giving a step up the ladder of helping BCU students differentiate themselves from our graduates and potentially more employable within the industry.
University is an opportunity, one you have to grab with both hands and I am very much a believer you need to put the effort in to get the most from the experience rather than being spoon fed all the time. If you are willing to do this, you’ll enjoy the time and get a great deal from it.
