Child Psychology

Hi. I am very interested in doing Child Psychology. I have 5 GCSEs including Science and English but I only have a BTEC maths- Pass. Would I be able to do this particular degree or would I have to reset GCSE maths?

Hmm, I think you'll have to re-sit Maths.

I also have CACHE Level 3 in Childcare and Education and over 3 years experience in working with children of different ages. What exactly would I need to be able to do Child Psychology?
Do I need to do a general Psychology degree which is what 3 years?? and then go into the children part of it? Please give me any information you may have. Thanks :smile:

The entry requirements vary depending on which university you want to go to.

One of my choices is Hallam, so I'll put a link to their site, so it can give you some sort of idea on what kind of entry requirements are valid. :smile:

Child psychology isn't a profession (here's a list of the types of professional psychologists), although I think you can become a counseling or educational psychologist who works mostly with kids. Alternatively if you want to be a researcher/lecturer/phd student you can choose to study children. All these careers are very hard to get into, and you can just get into it as easily as you would become a primary school teacher or something similar.

Child psychology at university will be much like a regular psychology degree with more modules within education/developmental psychology/counseling(maybe).

Or seek out counselling qualifications through a college. You can go from start to qualified in 4 years (working with clients in 2) and cost is less than 1 year of uni. Many trainees work with children. I did part of my placement with a youth charity and worked from age 13 + but if your qualification is child orientated you'd be able to work with younger children - mine was adult counselling.
